Peace and Justice: a Common Quest for Universities, Governments and Civil Society.

International University Impact Forum
English.
Peaceful, just and inclusive societies are necessary to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To advance the SDGs in general, and SDG 16 – peace, justice and strong institutions more specifically, we need effective and inclusive public institutions. Governments, civil society and communities must work together to implement lasting solutions, and universities must take a leading role.

Deusto University in collaboration with Times Higher Education (THE) is organising the “University Impact Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions Forum” in Bilbao on February 20th and 21st, 2020. This international forum seeks to analyse this role that universities, besides their essential knowledge generation and educational activities, can and should play in support of justicepeace and human rights to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.

International Jesuit University Collaboration for Praxis Education

20 years of Casa
English.
In commemoration of the lives and commitments of the University of Central America (UCA) martyrs in El Salvador, Casa de la Solidaridad opened its doors in 1999 to visiting U.S. students for a semester of academic, community, and spiritual reflection and immersion in El Salvador.  Since then, this praxis-based approach for U.S. students expanded to the Philippines and Argentina.  More recently, the UCA launched Centro Ignacio Ellacuría (CIE) to create praxis-based academic formation programs rooted in the Ignatian tradition for Central American students.

Casa’s model begins by making a preferential option for the poor. Over the course of the semester, students accompany community members in marginalized neighbourhoods. This experience then informs classroom discussion and personal and community reflection on the local reality.

Twenty years after its launching Casa is poised to open its doors yet again this time in Belize, “Casa Belize”. This project will be delivered in collaboration between Saint Louis University (SLU) in U.S. and St. John’s College (SJC) in Belize and with the advice of CIE.

Learn more about this new project “Casa Belize” and the casa model reading this article by Tom Hare, Casa Belize Coordinator, Saint Louis University. Read Article
