Become a Faculty Fellow - Applications Due Feb. 21
The Clemson University School of Health Research is accepting applications for Faculty Fellows for summer and fall 2020. Faculty Fellows are tenured faculty members who are embedded in a Prisma Health–Upstate department for a summer and semester term in order to produce health-related scholarship. During this time, the Fellow is able to shift focus from regular teaching duties to developing a comprehensive research agenda with their host clinical department, serving as a bridge to additional collaborative research. Additional information about the fellowship and application can be found here. An informational meeting about the fellowship will be held from 10 - 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, in 201 Edwards Hall. Contact Thomas Britt at twbritt@clemson.edu with any questions.
Health Research Spotlight: Hip Replacement Research

Fei Peng, an SC-TRIMH junior investigator and associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, is studying micro strain sensor arrays to identify the contact patch and contact stress distribution between the femoral head and acetabular cup liner during a total hip replacement surgery. In total hip arthroplasty, typical complications are dislocation of the joint and loosening of the bond between the implant and the bone. These are often caused by the implant mal-positioning during the surgery. His research goal is to provide surgeons real-time information that is needed to determine whether the implant components are correctly positioned. He and his research team have demonstrated the feasibility of micro sensor arrays that can accurately measure the contact patch and strain distribution on the acetabular liner. He has been collaborating on this research with Michael Kissenberth, a physician at Prisma Health, for the past three years. Peng plans to continue to improve sensor accuracy and broaden the applications of such strain mapping capability to other joint surgeries. He and his research team also plan to develop software to help visualize the sensor data for the surgeons.
Health Researcher Spotlight: Martine LaBerge

Martine LaBerge, chair of the Department of Bioengineering, recently received the inaugural Herbert Voigt Distinguished Service Award from the Biomedical Engineering Society. This award recognizes her service to the society through volunteering and leadership. It’s the latest of many milestones in a career devoted to advancing the field of health research and transforming Clemson’s bioengineering department into a powerhouse of education and research. Clemson World Health Research Features
Clemson World Magazine featured health research stories in its latest issue. One article features Prisma Health physician Jennifer Hudson and Clemson public health sciences professor Rachel Mayo, who have been working together for the past several years developing and researching a way to treat babies born addicted to opiates.
