Who's Going? Lisa Is!

To Clean Water Lobby Day at the Capitol

Lisa Anderson is a tenacious advocate for safe drinking water in her community of Nelsonville.  Lisa became concerned about Nelsonville’s drinking water (residents there rely on private wells) when one high nitrate report after another piqued her attention.  Lisa organized community drinking water testing to help residents avoid unsafe water, with the result that over 40% of wells were found to be unsafe for nitrate.  Her attention then shifted to looking for the sources of nitrate (overwhelmingly local agriculture) and the problem of how Nelsonville will get safe water.

Come join Lisa and lots of your central Wisconsin water friends, and water advocates from around the state at Clean Water Lobby Day on January 30.  This year is especially critical:  2019 was the Year of Clean Drinking Water and there’s work for us all to do.  The legislative Water Quality Task Force  just released its recommendations.  PFAS pollution is a new concern.  And we finally are getting some attention on nitrate.  Also let’s not forget the Central Sands Lakes Study needs to be prodded along.  In these times of record rainfall, it’s easy to imagine legislators “forgetting” about the pumping issue.

Turn Your Old Christmas Tree into Trout Habitat!

Your old Christmas tree can help restore trout habitat on the Isherwood Lateral where it transects the Justin and Lynn Isherwood Farm in Portage County.  Only two zillion trees are needed, and you can be part of this great project.  Bring your neighbor’s tree, or if you know of some trees that went unsold on some lot, bring those too!

The trees will be used by the Isaac Walton League and other volunteers in the tried-and-true method of narrowing and deepening the stream while stabilizing its banks.  The “Ikes” have done scores of stream miles in this fashion over the years.

About a decade ago the Portage County Drainage Board dredged out the trout habitat that naturalized in the creek from ditch construction in the early 1900s.  Ever since, the Isherwoods have been trying to restore the habitat, with great resistance and even spite (so says the circuit judge) from the Portage County Drainage Board.  The dredging may have been an unnecessary expense that did little to improve land drainage.  The Isherwoods have prevailed in the Circuit and Appeals courts at the expense of hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Drainage Board.  The Board is appealing now to the Supreme Court.

So think about taking a drive to Isherwood’s to drop off a tree (or several)!  And while you’re at it, enjoy a stroll along the Isherwood Lateral and maybe see thousands of spawning brook trout.  Trees should be clean and free of tinsel and the like.  Call or text Justin to arrange:  715-570-4033.
