Beach Slang - The Deadbeat Bang of Heartbreak City (Bridge Nine)

On a recent episode, we said that new Beach Slang song “Tommy in the ‘80s” is about Tommy Stinson. Point of clarification: The song is about the late, great Tommy Keene (Hear our interview with him from 2017 here). But … Stinson does play on this record, so you can understand our confusion. Anyway, “Tommy in the ‘80s” is Slang leader James Alex’s tribute to both power-popster Keene and, in a way, to the Replacements, who similarly once wrote a song paying tribute to a musical hero.

Echosmith - Lonely Generation (self-released)

Fans of this indie pop band’s debut have waited seven years for a proper follow-up album. Now it’s here, and it’s poppy and bouncy and dancy and feels like just what we all need to start off a new year.

Selena Gomez - Rare (Interscope)

The third album by the former Disney Channel kid star is getting solid reviews for its maturity and themes of strength and hope. For a young artist who continually gets scrutinized for her looks, health and romantic partnerships, it’s good to see that she can power through by focusing on the work.
