SAA offers many ways for you to get involved with and give back to the profession! Here are a few opportunities available now:
  • Apply to volunteer for an SAA-appointed group: Learn how the application process works and what positions are available. Then submit your application by January 17.
  • Join the Archival Compensation Task Force: The SAA Council has approved creation of an Archival Compensation Task Force and is looking for volunteers to serve. If interested, complete the volunteer form by January 24.  
  • Sign up to be a mentor: Mentors and protégés connect in the SAA Mentoring Program to advance their continuing education and achieve career goals. Protégés, at all stages of their careers, seek counseling on career objectives and opportunities, and your knowledge and experience can serve as an excellent resource. Register today to be a SAA mentor.
ADVOCACY

SAA Statement on Targeting of Cultural Heritage Sites for Destruction
SAA has grave concerns about President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Iranian cultural heritage sites could be targeted as part of a military strike. The targeting of cultural heritage sites is a crime under the law of armed conflict, including the 1949 Geneva Convention for the Protection of Civilian Persons in Times of War and the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property. SAA Comments on Proposed Hike in USCIS Records Access Fees
SAA “was dismayed to learn of the proposed changes in fees for accessing the public records of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS),” per comments submitted to the chief of the Regulatory Coordination Division of the USCIS on December 30, 2019. Read the full comment.

Call for Applicants for Associate Editor of TWPS Case Studies Series
The Teaching with Primary Sources subcommittee of the Reference, Access and Outreach Section seeks applications for Associate Editor of the Case Studies on Teaching With Primary Sources series. The Associate Editor works with the Editor to maintain the series and coordinates the review process with peer reviewers. The Associate Editor will become the Editor, requiring a two-year commitment. Submit a statement of interest, a writing sample, and a resume/CV to twps-casestudies@archivists.org. Deadline: February 1.

Planning New and Remodeled Archival Facilities Now Available as Ebook
Planning New and Remodeled Archival Facilities by Thomas P. Wilsted is now available as an epub and pdf. The book is designed to assist those planning archival facilities to educate architects and others working with archival building planners about specific functional and collection needs. The book covers the building process; renovating existing buildings; technical issues such as fire protection, security, and the building environment; and equipment, including shelving and move planning.
Fall/Winter 2019 American Archivist
Half of the content—including 11 articles and reviews—from the latest American Archivist is now online! Articles examine the roles of archivists and catalogers, consider virtual reality experiences for archival collections, reflect on the adoption of EAD twenty years later, highlight a case study for reassessing audiovisual materials, and more. Start reading now (you'll need to log in to access the issue).

There's more in the pipeline. The journal is experimenting with "advance article publication," meaning that content will continue to be published online as it becomes available for this issue. DEADLINE TODAY: Propose a Pre-Conference Course at ARCHIVES*RECORDS 2020
SAA Education seeks proposals for pre-conference courses to be held August 23, 2020, at the Joint Annual Meeting in Chicago. Possible topics for half-day or full-day courses include archives management (budgeting/finances, facilities, security, soft skills, ethics, disaster planning); diversity, equity, and inclusion for archives managers and practitioners; and courses that support the DAS and A&D Certificate programs. Submit your proposal.

New Book Edited by SAA Members 
Teaching Undergraduates with Archives mirrors the evolving practice and academic research on primary sources in the classroom and features case studies, reflections, and forecasts concerning critical thinking, active learning, and archival evidence. The result of a national symposium at the University of Michigan in 2018, chapters describe collaborations between faculty, archivists, librarians, and students. Edited by Nancy Bartlett, Elizabeth Gadelha, and Cinda Nofziger and published in 2019 by Maize Books, Teaching Undergraduates with Archives is available in print and as a free ebook.

On this virtual tour, led by Cynthia Becht, head of Archives and Special Collections at LMU, viewers will see the university’s dedicated special collections classroom and learn how it was designed to meet the needs of a flexible active learning space. Call for MAC Poster Presentations
The Midwest Archives Conference, to be held May 6–9, 2020, in Des Moines, Iowa, invites poster proposal submissions on all aspects of archival practice and research, as well as from allied and related fields. To submit, fill out the Google Form. Proposals due January 17.

Call for Nominations for Distinguished Alumni Award
The Alumni Association at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill seeks nominations for its Distinguished Alumni Award. This award recognizes outstanding professional library or information science achievements at national, state or local levels; and/or outstanding service to the UNC School of Information and Library Science or its Alumni Association. To nominate someone, complete the form by January 31.

Call for Proposals and Papers for ICA Abu Dhabi 2020 Congress
The International Council on Archives' (ICA) 2020 meeting will be held November 16–20 in Abu Dhabi. ICA encourages archives and records management professionals to submit proposals on the theme of "Empowering Knowledge Societies" and to reach out to librarians, museum professionals, data managers, journalists, and people working in civil society and information professions to be part of this conversation. The program committee invites proposals related to the themes of artificial intelligence, digital preservation and emerging technologies; sustainable knowledge; and trust and evidence. Deadline: February 1.

Apply to the ARSC Research Grants Program
The Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) Research Grants Program supports scholarship and publication in the fields of sound recording research and audio preservation. Projects on discography, bibliography, historical studies of the sound recording industry and its products, and other subjects that may increase the public's understanding and appreciation of the lasting importance of recorded sound are encouraged. Review the grant guidelines and submit by February 29.

OCLC to Develop Infrastructure to Support Linked Data Management Initiatives
OCLC received a two-year grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to develop a shared “Entity Management Infrastructure” that will support linked data management initiatives underway in the library and scholarly communications community. When complete, this infrastructure will be jointly curated by the community and OCLC, and will ultimately make scholarly materials more connected and discoverable on the web. Learn more.

Call for Student Paper and Poster Proposals
The 2020 Student Program Subcommittee is accepting proposals for two special sessions dedicated to student scholarship during the Joint Annual Meeting of CoSA and SAA in Chicago, August 2–8, 2020. Work from both master's and doctoral students will be considered. Learn more. Deadline: February 3.
