Welcome to the 2020s! It is a time filled with immense challenges and yet many signs of hope. At the top of the list is the growing climate crisis tempered by the many countries, states, cities, businesses, schools and NGOs working to shift our economies and culture in a sustainable direction.
At the international level, the UN Sustainable Development Goals provide an excellent framework for the change we need, and the role of partnerships in working towards them.
C40, a network of the world’s megacities committed to addressing climate change, refers to the 2020's as the climate action decade in which “we must peak emissions by the end of 2020 to avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis. The 2020s will be the decade we create an equitable, sustainable future that works for everyone, everywhere. Let’s work together to make 2020 the year we changed everything.”
In that spirit, let's see what we can each do to be a part of the solution in our daily lives. In a new published article, Non-motorized Transport: Walking and Cycling, for the Sustainable Cities and Communities Volume of the Encyclopedia of UN Sustainable Development Goals, I write about walking and cycling as an important way to reduce one's carbon footprint (and live a more joyful, healthy life!) and the conditions needed to make these options more possible for more people in everyday life. Highlighted interventions and initiatives for increasing walking and cycling include Vision Zero and Safe Routes to School.
