What Is it about the Water?
Texts: Isaiah 42:1-9; Psalm 29; Matthew 3:13-17

On this Baptism of Christ Sunday, we will explore the question:  What is the purpose of baptism in the 21st century?

I Invite those of you who have been baptized to bring mementos or pictures of your baptism or your children’s or grandchildren’s to be used during the children’s message in worship.

A focal point in the Matthew 3 lesson is verse 14b, when John says, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” John sees his position as the baptizer of Jesus as a reversal of roles. I will use this theme of role reversal to explore how different roles get reversed when one lives out the kingdom or gospel values, rather than the values of our world. In the not-too-distant past, people just assumed that we were all living gospel values in our society. Now, we can’t assume that anything in our society reflects what Jesus taught. How do we discern? Where is the greatest tension today as we seek to live gospel values in our society? How do we support one another in following the Way of Jesus?

December 17, 2019 Session meeting began at 7:00 p.m.
Devotion was led by Ruth.  Discussion was had about the refugees seeking asylum in the San Fernando Valley including five children that had a better chance because lawyers were funded to their cases.
A letter was received from the Pasadena Presbyterian Church confirming the Certificate of Transfer for the membership of Gordon Stecklein.  Baptism of his son Clark was done December 1.  Our new transitional pastor Ann Hayman asked for suggestions for think piece topics over the coming year one of which could be the care and feeding of our pastors.  She is getting settled in her new office, duties, and participation in the church choir.
Cliff and Betsy will be leaving Session as their term limits have expired.  New Session members will be voted in on Sunday January 12th to replace them.  Cliff will continue on the PNC and Betsy will continue in mission.
The deacons have coupons for ACCESS and an application for assistance is available for those that need it.
The EPCC newsletters will be available in the narthex for those that are interested.
We are grateful for our relationship with KCVC and the shared services with Messy Church, the Blessing of the Animals and the Christmas/Hanukkah celebration was lots of fun.  We received a yule log cake from them, that was shared at our Christmas Eve service.  They also sent an Edible Arrangement for Session to share during one of our meetings and cookies were given from Cathleen from the EPCC (delicious!).
PNC has uploaded our call and mission statement to the Presbyterian website and are currently reviewing applications!
Property and Finance reported that our budget is in the black thanks to the continued success of the preschool and generous stewardship pledges.  Thank you!
Christmas Eve service communion would be by intinction not a passed tray of cups.
75th anniversary mugs have been given to visitors of the Christmas Eve service and more will be given out in the narthex before regular Sunday services.
