The songwriter Jackson Browne wrote the song that was made particularly famous when Nico recorded it in 1967: These days. The last line of the song is plaintive, and gentle. “Please don’t confront me with my failures. I had not forgotten them.”
Failing is the perhaps the most universal human experience. We might expect to succeed at some things, some of the time, or we might not. But one thing is for sure, we will fail at many of the things we attempt. We will get things wrong.
The key to dealing with this is learning to accept it. To building a sense of self that allows us to fail at times, and that doesn’t require us to succeed in order to be worthy of love and kindness. The next step is to project that same thinking on to others too.
