Looking forward to spring

Happy New Year to everyone! We hope you all had a great Christmas and here's to a peaceful and healthy 2020. After a few days away spending time with our family over Christmas and the New Year we are now back at it with a vengeance, amazed at the growth on some of the bulbous plants.

Over the past few weeks we have been busy clearing and cleaning all the tunnel houses and filling them yet again, its like the Forth Bridge! It doesn't take Carl long to fill a tunnel after I have cleared and cleaned it; sometimes he is badgering me to get a move on because he is running out of space.

What can I say about the weather because being British we always have to talk about that subject! If you, like us, have had enough of the wet stuff, make the most of the dry sunny days we get at this time of the year to tidy up the garden and greenhouse.

Iris 'Katherine Hodgkin', a particular favourite of mine, is now well into growth with flower buds a-plenty. It's such a beautiful colour combination and some have already been sent out as free plants with orders this year. Many of the hooped petticoat narcissi are budded up with one or two already flowering. Narcissus 'Julia Jane' is a reliable plant for this time of the year; its dainty nodding heads of sunshine yellow bring a little brightness to a dark day in the garden or greenhouse.
A stalwart for early flowering are the Ipheion with Ipheion 'Alberto Castillo' and Ipheion 'Tessa' being the first to flower. Both have in fact been flowering here since before Christmas!

Soon the Corydalis solida varieties will be appearing and have already been selling well with the anticipation of coming spring. Corydalis solida 'Purple Bird', being just one of the many varieties we grow. The Anemone nemorosa are throwing up new growth from their woody roots and will soon be brightening up the shady parts of the garden. They are all lovely of course, but my favourites are the blue shades of Anemone nemorosa 'Marts Blue', Anemone nemorosa 'Allenii' and Anemone nemorosa 'Royal Blue'.
Many of you already know of Carl's passion for South African bulbous plants and with the gradual change in our climate there has been more interest in these incredibly beautiful plants. We have added quite a few new varieties to our list over the past few weeks, including Gladiolus tristis, Gladiolus eqiutans, Gladiolus huttonii, Freesia laxa azurea, Gladiolus miniatus and Gladiolus carinatus 'Blue Shades', with some selling out as fast as we upload them to the website. We give cultural instructions for all varieties in our online descriptions, but remember you can always call us or email us for any further advice if you need it.
We would like to thank you all for supporting us over the past twelve months, not only in the UK but in many other countries throughout Europe. We will strive to continue to provide as good, if not better, service in 2020.
