Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #433 - 28 January 2020

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community? Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions. Thank you for your support.

NEW PENALTIES ANNOUNCED

Throwing lit cigarette butts from cars and trucks is dangerous. Cigarettes can start bush and grass fires, and place lives at risk. It's also bad for the environment.

From 17 January 2020, motorists caught tossing a lit cigarette will be penalised FIVE DEMERIT POINTS AND A FINE OF $660. This is the first time a demerit point penalty has been imposed on this type of offence.

If a motorist commits the offence during a total fire ban, the penalty will double to TEN DEMERIT POINTS AND A FINE OF $1320.

Penalties will also apply to passengers caught tossing a lit cigarette on or near the roadway. They will be fined $660 – this will double during total fire bans.

To report someone who has thrown a lit cigarette out the window of a vehicle, record the vehicle registration and contact the NSW Rural Fire Service hotline on 1800 679 737.

ITS THE LONG WEEKEND - AUSTRALIA DAY - How good is that? Just back at work and we get another day off! - Well, not me, I'm working, but that's ok.

Already this January, including yesterday the 23rd, we have had 18 deaths on our roads in NSW alone. (That's nearly one person killed as a result of a motor vehicle collision each day). That’s 18 families and all the relatives of those 18 families who have been directly affected by these tragedies.

So, a message from us to you ..........

Please drive carefully this long weekend. Remember, double demerits are running now and are in place for this weekend until midnight Monday 27th January 2020.

Plan your trip and take regular breaks.

Pay attention to what you and others are doing on the roads.

Buckle up and make sure your passengers do the same.

Don’t speed – If double demerits aren’t enough to change your driving manner then please think about this – speeding does have a tendency to maim and kill.

Please do not drink and drive and don’t drive whilst under the influence of other illicit drugs. It’s not fair to the other road users and your own family and friends.

If you do commit any of the offences above, there’s a pretty good chance that either we the police, or your next life will catch you earlier than expected.

(Photographs are of a single vehicle collision where speed was the main factor)

Please drive safely and have a great weekend.

Police have received numerous reports of a person advertising hay bales on social media for a discounted price.

In each of the cases, the seller has taken an initial deposit for the fodder but has not delivered any product.

The fraud is not isolated to a specific area. Police have received reports from the Mid North Coast, the Hunter Valley, the Southern Highlands, the Hills, and the Oxley, Nepean, and Port Stephens areas.

A number of people have lost money as a result of the scam.

Police advise anyone buying supplies online to only deal with people and businesses that have proven to be genuine in the past.

Where possible, it is best to only hand over money until the goods are in possession

If you have any information that might assist our investigators in relation to these crimes, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or visit their website.

Police have released CCTV vision of a vehicle of interest as they continue to investigate a home invasion in Sydney’s Inner West earlier this month.

Emergency services were called to Unwins Bridge Road, Sydenham, just after 9.30pm on Sunday 12 January 2020, after two men forced entry into a home and confronted three occupants.

Police have been told the males – armed with crow bars – threatened the residents – two women, aged 20 and 52, and an 18-year-old man – before assaulting the man and detaining him and the younger woman in a room.

Upon arrival of officers from Inner West Police Area Command, the men ran from the scene.

The older woman and man were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital suffering minor injuries. They have since been released.

A crime scene was established which has been examined by specialist forensic officers.

As part of ongoing inquiries, detectives have released CCTV vision of a vehicle, which was seen on Unwins Bridge Road shortly before the incident.

The vehicle is described as a silver sedan.

Anyone who has any information about the vehicle or who has dash cam vision from the area about 9.20pm the same day is urged to come forward.

Investigations are continuing.

Anyone with information that may assist detectives is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or visit Crime Stoppers website. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report crime via NSW Police social media pages.

25 January, from Meredith Ingoldby, Scam Watchdog Australia

My husband saw a Facebook ad for a self-cleaning cat litter box. It was just the thing he needed, and 'a steal' at $40. He went ahead and ordered one.

It was a steal, all right!

The first pic is of the product he ordered; the second is what was delivered yesterday: One cheap plastic tray, one cracked 'lid' and one scoop. (The toilet rolls are there only to give you an idea of the tray's size.) 😂 The company has since disappeared from Facebook. The website he ordered through has gone too.

At least he didn't lose too much money - and it gave us both a good laugh.

22 January, from Australian Federal Police

It’s almost Lunar New Year, which means an increase in the importation of ‘joss paper’ – or Chinese Training Notes which when printed, can resemble Australian banknotes.

Traditionally used as part of money ceremonies and Lunar New Year festivities, they can unintentionally enter into general circulation to be used as legal tender.

We urge retailers to keep an eye out for potential ‘fake cash’ which may be in circulation in the lead up to Lunar New Year celebrations on 25 January.
