BOOK PRESENTATION BY AUTHOR:
Donna Zajonc
TUESDAY, JANUARY 28, 5 PM, FREE

Sassiean historical novel — Cinderella story set in the Dust Bowl and Great Depression of the 1930s to 1960s.

Donna Zajonc is a child of the 30's when the dust bowl and great depression were wending their way across the country. As an only child on a farm, with a family that rarely spoke, Donna may well have felt that she, like Sassie, was as well off without the luxury of speech as with it. Donna writes about those times in an engaging and fanciful manner. This Cinderella Story is for anyone old enough to vote or drink beer!

TOUR:
THE ARCHEOLOGICAL RUINS at MITLA
and YAGUL

THURSDAY, JANUARY 30, 9 AM - 4 PM
MX$350 (M) MX$400 (NM)

Mitla and Yagul are the most important archaeological sites near Oaxaca, after Monte Alban. Mitla, which became the religious center of the Zapotec empire after the decline of Monte Alban, is notable for its many nearly-intact buildings, many of which exhibit striking architectural details, like the exquisite stone fretwork that adorns both exterior and interior walls.

The palace complex at Yagul is impressive for its size and the presence of tombs and a large ball court. The fortress hill behind the palace offers a great view of the Tlacolula valley.

The group will stop for lunch at the Sabor de Antequera restaurant, which provides a stunning all-you-can-eat buffet. (Note: tour price does not include lunch, which will cost approximately 200 pesos for food and beverage.)

This lecture titled Politics and Education, and presented in Spanish, will deal with the challenges facing education as a transformation agent in democratic societies of today.

The underlying idea of this lecture is that politics and not political power is based on human fundamental and basic rights. Interaction in society is the important element to establishing the relationship between politics and education. We will discuss the political organization of all human beings based on democracy. Democracy is the basis of society and the role of education as the agent of change.

Mtro. Edrey Garcia Reyes has a degree in Law from La Salle University in Oaxaca and a Masters degree in Human Rights from the University of San Luis Potosi. He teaches human rights, political science, political philosophy, and bioethics and education at various universities in Oaxaca and Mexico.

He is a columnist for the Oaxaca newspaper “El Imparcial”, writing articles on politics. Mtro. Edrey is currently teaching in the Education Department of La Salle University.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3
MX$90 (M) MX$130 (NM) PER LECTURE*

This is the first in a series of three lectures.
