Summary of Last Meeting

Basic Track
  • What are Quantum Computers: Andy went over the limitations of classical computers and motivations behind quantum computing. He introduced the two most important phenomena: superposition and quantum entanglement. His slides can be found here.
  • Motivation for Going Quantum: After a quick introduction to Quantum Computing, Kyler introduced qubits, the building block of quantum computers, and some misconceptions people might have about them. He explained the concepts of qubits using magnets! His slides can be found here.
  • Intro to Qubit: Having all the technical details about the subject, Chris introduced math used behind quantum computations including bra and ket notation, superposition, and entanglement. He went over how to represent a state of qubits using them. His slides can be found here.
All the slides for this quarter can be found in this google drive folder.
Advanced Track
  • Sharing and Discussing Different Notes & Books: We went over a few problems from Preskill's notes and Nielsen and Chuang's book. However, we decided to use Prof. Irani's class that was offered last fall (Prof. Irani's class website) to self and group study since not all Preskill's problems had a solution and agreed that the level of difficulty of Prof. Irani's notes was suitable to the club. Action item: take a look at the first 2 weeks' lecture notes and homework from Prof. Irani's lecture and pick out problems and notes that you find interesting or confusing. We will go over those during our next meeting.

Summary of Last Quarter

We learnt the basics of quantum gates, Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm and Shor's algorithm. We also implemented it with Cirq and Qiskit. Finally, we ran the code on IBM Q Experience, the free cloud quantum computer from IBM!

Also, we heard from Prof. Sandy Irani about her research and opinion on many interesting topics including the recent supremacy argument. Moreover, we heard from our grad members about their research from various background such as physics, CS, chemistry and music. We were fascinated by their expectation for quantum computing and quantum information.

All the slides from the last quarter can be found in our club's Google Drive.

Welcome!

Hi Anteaters! We are excited to have many new members! Thanks for everyone who came by our booth on Thursday. Whatever background you may have, as long as you find QC interesting, we look forward to your participation! Let's start this new year by studying and exploiting the wonderful quantum magic!

QC@UCI?

QC@UCI was founded during this past summer by passionate undergraduate and graduate students from various backgrounds. From the very beginning, we aim to connect people from different fields and encourage everyone to learn something new as the inherently interdisciplinary nature of quantum computing and quantum information suggests. Moreover, we hope to stimulate the research and general interest towards this topic at UCI.

But how? We have planned 3 kinds of activities

Paper Discussion

Paper discussion sessions to keep you informed with the latest advancement.

Presentations

Presentations from students, professors and industry speakers to give you a taste of QC.

Projects

Projects will be led by experienced students. Find a project of your interest or invent your own!

Stay Tuned!

Please join our Slack workspace for more information! Whatever background you may have, as long as you find QC interesting, we look forward to your participation!
