Video Contest:
Be Counted, Your Community Depends on It!
The 2020 Census will determine congressional representation, inform hundreds of billions in federal funding, and provide data that will impact communities for the next decade. That’s why APOST is partnering with the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Pittsburgh Public Schools and the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers to host a countywide video competition which will help children understand the importance of participating in the census. Winners of the video contest will receive $500(1st), $250(2nd), or $100(3rd). The contest is open to K-12th graders across Allegheny county. We encourage you to enter with your afterschool program for a chance to win and learn more about the census!

We are also helping to spread the word about a fun, interactive app that helps students explore the census called “Space County”. Players collect 2020 Census data from four unique towns with unique challenges. This app is a great way to engage students and teach them about the importance of being counted. Space County is available for download on Androids and iPhones.

A+ Parent Panel
On February 6th at 5:30pm, A+ Schools is hosting a panel discussion on Building Strong School-Family Partnerships. The panel will consist of local teachers and family members who will be sharing tips and insights on how they have built successful and productive relationships to support the child's educational experience. This will be a great conversation for pre-service teachers, current teachers, school leadership, and families in your network to participate in and learn from one another.

APOST PD
Don't forget to mark your calendars for our back to back upcoming monthly PD! First up is (re)Designing Space(s) on Friday February 7th, where participants will gain insights from collaborating professionals and informal learning space providers--to help you better mold your space and fit the needs of your youth. The next day, Saturday February 8th, we'll kick off our first weekend double workshop with Stages of Youth Development and Basic Teaching Strategies. Stages of Youth Development reviews the four basic areas of human development as it relates to the various age groups of youth. After a short break, Teaching Strategies will help us review various learning styles as well as multiple intelligences and best practices and techniques to ensure that all children are learning in the way(s) that fits them best.

Grants
Allegheny County Mini-Grants: support for 2020 Census outreach activities that agree to advance the work of the 2020 Census with populations identified to be at risk of an undercount. Deadline: February 1st
Housing Assistance Grants: funding for operating housing assistance, including payment for rent, utilities, and related expenses. Deadline: February 3rd
Jefferson County Mini-Grants: support for 2020 Census outreach activities focused on historically undercounted and hard-to-count populations and communities. Deadline: February 28th
Nonprofit Security: support for security enhancements to protect the safety and security of the users of a facility. Deadline: February 14th
RML Ignite Grants: 5K for network members as they imagine something new, build on their strengths, or re-energize their existing learning innovations. Deadline: March 13th
PA Food Recovery: Grants up to 200K for shelters, food banks, nonprofit food management. Deadline: April 24th.
Staunton Farm Foundation: capacity building grants and support for 1 year. Deadline: March 31st
Governor's STEM: $500 grants to students grades 9-12 competing in STEM. Deadline: May 7-8, 2020

BoomWriter
BoomWriter's interactive writing site promotes creativity as students build on each other's work to create a final writing product. Once a book is completed it can be published online or purchased as a hard copy.

You Decide
Students of color in PA are far less likely than their white peers to have access to small classes, certified teachers and advanced coursework, according to a pair of new studies. The so-called “access” gap in Pennsylvania is among the nation’s largest, distinguishing the Keystone state as one of the America’s worst when it comes to educational equity for poor and non-white students.
