February 6 Meeting

We meet at the James Lorah Auditorium on the first Thursday of the month at 7:30pm. The meetings are free and open to all. Our speaker for the month of February is Judith Sutton.

Judith grew up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, when all the world was still farms and quiet roads. As a child, her father’s father helped her paint her first oil painting of her other grandfather’s fields. A little later she made a painting one summer in the kitchen of Katherine Steele Renninger, a family friend.

She earned a B.S. in Art History from Hollins University, Roanoke, Virgina, during which time she lived in Paris for a full year, studied at the Louvre and the Sorbonne and traveled extensively. Upon graduation, Judith moved to San Francisco, where she returned to school for a B.A. in Illustration from the Academy of Art. Editorial work for magazines, books, packaging, etc., took her to New York where she lived until her retirement from illustration work in 1998. She has taken classes at the New School, the Art Students League and the School of Visual Arts in New York, as well as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Since a summer spent in Umbria, Italy, doing plein air oil painting, she has given up watercolors for oils.

Her retirement has brought her full circle, back to Bucks County. There are lots of changes here, but beauty in every form still abounds and inspires. She paints still lifes, and more recently, interiors.

“I love old things and old places. Things I know the feel and smell of, things that have come down to me from generations past, or things and places I have just met, with always the hint of a story. And if a strong light happens to fall on them, so much the better.”
