2020 LEGISLATIVE UPDATE #2

Important News and Meetings:
  • Joint House and Senate Education Committee Meeting is this Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. in room 606 CLOB.
  • Legislature meets for days 5-9 this week, Jan. 27-31, 2020
Highlight of Bills Introduced:
  • Governor Kemp’s proposed budget highlights:
    • $2,000 pay raise for all public school teachers
    • $136,000 reduction to charter schools facility grant in 2020 amended budget
    • $204,000 reduction to charter schools facility grant in FY 2021 proposed budget
    • Cuts in other areas of the education budget
  • HB 755, Rep. Dave Belton, District 25. Local boards of education shall provide local charter schools with itemized allotment sheets for the upcoming fiscal year by July 1 of each year and 30 days' notice before any allocation is adjusted. This bill was referred to the House Education Committee.
  • HB 764, Rep.Todd Jones, District 112. State Properties Commission may make unused facilities available to local charter schools and state charter schools. This bill was referred to the House Education Committee.
  • HB 444, Rep. Burt Reeves, District 34. This bill is an overhaul of the State’s Dual Enrollment program that was tabled in the Senate at the end of last session. A revised version was reviewed and considered in the Senate Higher Education Committee.
  • SB 210, Sen. Jeff Mullis, District 53. This bill would encourage all elementary schools to provide 30 minutes of recess for students in Kindergarten and grades one through five.
  • HB 783, Rep. Erica Thomas, District 39. Raises the age of mandatory education for children from 16 to 17.
