Zachor: International Holocaust Remembrance Day
January 27, 2020
Today, in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, we join in remembering those who perished during the Holocaust. We choose to remember through the art of Arthur Szyk, whose memorial work Zachor (Remember) honors the memory of the six million Jews of Europe who lost their lives. In his design, Szyk symbolizes the post-Holocaust era of the Jewish people with a rose and thorns, an evocative representation of both beauty and pain. Szyk designed this image in the aftermath of the war's end, recalling that life, beauty and goodness can still spring forth from the thorn of suffering. His inclusion of a Hebrew quote from Deuteronomy 26:8, “And God brought us out from there [Egypt] with a strong hand and outstretched arm," parallels the oppression, liberation and exodus of his Hebrew ancestors with the tragic experiences of contemporary Holocaust victims and survivors.
