Greetings from Game Plan: College!

Game Plan: College is a FREE one-stop-shop for information about how to plan, prepare, and be accepted to 4-year and 2-year colleges as well as professional certificate programs. Students participate in interactive workshops and individualized one-on-one advising services (including virtual), ACT Test Prep, and Enrichment Programs that are led by Emily K Center Staff and are supported by the program’s Teen Ambassadors. 

We assist any Durham high school student with ANYTHING college related!

We are so excited to announce the date for our second annual college expo! We look forward to welcoming over 50 in-state and out-of-state colleges. There will be presentations regarding college access, parent engagement, test prep strategies, and more.

Project FINE Tutorial & Remediation Program
Overview:  The Project FINE Tutorial & Remediation Program provides FREE one-on-one tutorial and remediation assistance for students in kindergarten through college on Saturdays (January-May) from 10:00am until 12:00pm.  Students are also provided a snack.

Screening & Panel Discussion - When They See Us
Overview:  Join us for a screening and panel discussions on When They See Us series which chronicles the harrowing story of the case of the Central Park Five, which divided New York City in 1989.  The series provides a provocative and emotional view into the legal system. 
The panel discussions will center on the need to address the biases and inequities afflicting the legal system if we want to protect Black and Latino children and possible solutions ensure the fair and impartial administration of justice.  Panelists will include law enforcement, advocates, professors, and lawyers.  Refreshments will be provided.

2020 Neighborhood Matching Grants -- Youth Submissions Encouraged!
Overview:  Neighborhood Improvement Services’ Community Engagement Team is NOW accepting applications for the 2020 Neighborhood Matching Grants! This program was created in 2016 to award neighborhood associations, homeowner associations, community watch groups, and resident groups up to $2,500 to fund a community project. The project must benefit the neighborhood’s quality of life and be managed by community members. Projects that have been funded in the past can be found here. The City’s funds can be matched with volunteer hours, in-kind donations, or monetary donations. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the Neighborhood Matching Grant program, please fill out an interest form on our webpage. The City’s Community Engagement team is excited to accept applications from youth and to support them and other community members in the application process.

Parent and Families Advocacy and Support Training (P-FAST) program and Latino our Parent and Families Advocacy and Support Training
Overview:  This fun training helps parents navigate the Durham Public School System. During the training we talk about different themes to transform your child’s educational experience for the better. Themes covered include the impact of technology on children; how to understand report cards and school exams; support services for children with special education needs and the importance of parent participation in a child's education. Childcare will be provided. There will be two sessions held simultaneously in English and Spanish. Juntos for a better education – Middle School Family Workshop Series
Overview:  Please save the date as Durham Cooperative Extension we will be offering the Juntos for a better education program for Spanish speaking parents and their 7th and 8th graders. Juntos provides students and their parents with knowledge, skills, and resources to keep Latino youth engaged in school and to encourage families to work together to gain access to college. Parents who are interested can contact Angie at 919-560-7978.
Flyers and registration links for Juntos will be sent out closer to the start of the program. Childcare will be provided.

Hotspot Checkout from Durham County Library 
Overview: Durham County Library patrons can borrow mobile hotspots to take the internet wherever they go. A hotspot is a portable device that provides Wi-Fi internet access to computers, phones, or tablets. They connect to 4G LTE speeds through a cellular network, and DCo Library hotspots come with unlimited data. So, if you don’t have internet at home or want a reliable internet connection for your devices on vacation, hotspots are a great option.

PD Opportunities for Educators
UNC-Chapel Hill Scholarships and Student Aid 
Request a visit to your school or event. Carolina's Office of Scholarships and Student Aid is offering local visits to help students understand what financial aid is available at Carolina and how to apply for it. To request a visit at your location, please complete an Outreach Request Form. We recommend submitting your request at least three weeks in advance of the event.
