Resilience, Perserverance, and Hope: Raphael's Story
In case you missed it, we're so excited to share the story of one of our amazing community members with you! Raphael's story is one of resilience, perseverance, and hope. After fleeing war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Raphael was resettled in the Triad. He is now working, pursuing higher education, and volunteering with us here at World Relief!
Thank you Summit Church of Kernersville for producing this beautiful video.  Watch Raphael's story here >>

Trusted and Valued: Immigration Legal Services Continues to Grow
In Fiscal Year 2019, we served 254 new cases through our Immigration Legal Services (ILS) department -- and we're continuing to grow! Many clients are returning for additional services and referring friends and family, demonstrating that we are a trusted and valued resource among the immigrant community. This past week, ILS kicked-off their largest 10-week citizenship class yet! Responding to community feedback, ILS staff and interns are also hard at work developing a "one-stop-shop" Citizenship Clinic in order to share resources and information with more of our immigrant neighbors.

Anti-Human Trafficking: Developing Culturally Relevant Strategies
In December, World Relief gathered state-wide stakeholders to consult with a survivor of trafficking from an Illicit Massage Business (IMB) and to strategize ways we can meet the needs of victims in similar situations. The majority of IMB victims are of Asian decent, and North Carolina stakeholders want to ensure all efforts are culturally relevant and effective in order to help as many people as possible. Gatherings like these help us connect with partners, seek answers to important questions, and improve the overall impact of our work. Current stakeholders in this effort include: Justice Matters, World Relief, Massage Parlor Board members, The Salvation Army, and other agencies.

Refugee Students Form Friendships and Find Mentors Through Our After-School Program
This semester, our Youth Mentoring Program has launched a new, after-school initiative for high school students. These weekly gatherings give refugee students the opportunity to connect with one another in a welcoming environment where they can form friendships, receive homework help, and engage with trusted adult mentors from the community.
We're excited to see how these students grow as they pursue their goals!

World Relief Responds to Governor Abbott: We're Here to Stay
Matthew 25 compels us to welcome the stranger. Here in the Triad, we're fortunate to have the support of Governor Cooper and the Forsyth and Guilford County Commissions to continue resettling refugees as we live out this mission.

Recently however, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that he will not support refugee resettlement in his great state. In response, and with the support of volunteers and donors, our World Relief colleagues in Texas are speaking out to say that they're here to stay, stand, and support refugees and vulnerable immigrants. WE'RE HIRING
We are currently hiring for two positions: Please help us spread the word so we can find the best candidates possible!
If you love to help people feel welcome or to see youth reaching for and achieving their dreams, we've got volunteer opportunities for you.
**HIGH NEED: Front Desk**
THURSDAYS | 1-5pm
We're looking for a volunteer who can help at our High Point front desk. Desk volunteers help us create a warm welcome by greeting visitors, directing phone calls, and providing information to guests. If you'd like to help with this need, please email triadvc@wr.org. Thanks!
Youth Mentoring
High Point | Mondays | 4-5:30pm
We're in search of individuals interested in mentoring high school students as they set future goals and dreams. Mentors help students develop realistic plans to attain these dreams, and may also provide academic tutoring. To get connected with our youth mentoring program, email us at triadvc@wr.org

Have you logged your volunteer hours?
When you log the time you spend volunteering, we’re able to show that our community puts support into action when it comes to creating a welcoming environment for our refugee, immigrant, and survivor neighbors. We use that information to advocate for more programs and more opportunities to bring our community together and to empower others. Your hours also help us raise a cash match required by certain grants and programs. A volunteer hour is currently valued at $25.43, so every hour logged counts! By logging your hours, you're helping us serve more people in more ways - thank you!

A great way to partner with WR Triad is by praying with and for us! We're seeking prayer for...
  • our clients who are experiencing social isolation, missing family, suffering with worries of the mind and heart - that they may continue to feel welcome from the our community; comfort by leaning on friends, community members, and service providers; and freedom from stigma in seeking mental health support
  • continued community conversations that address family wellness - that more families and partners experience the love and peace that comes through respectful and safe relationships
  • single parent households with children not in school yet - that they would find childcare and employment that meets their families’ needs
  • more law enforcement agents to support the fight against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children as a result of upcoming trainings
  • our Anti-Human Trafficking Youth Outreach Program - that we would be able to prevent and identify human trafficking among the runaway and homeless youth in Guilford County
  • increased opportunities to engage our volunteer and foreign-born communities - that God would continue to transform the Triad through these cross-cultural friendships
  • our hiring process as we seek to fill open positions with individuals who are both skilled and passionate about the work we do
The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. - Psalm 34:17
We are in search of some special donations...
  • A double stroller for a mother of 3, including a newborn and a 1 yr-old
  • Pollinator plants for our community garden (plants or funds for plants are both welcome)
  • A sturdy bush hog that can take on the kudzu in our community garden
If you would like to donate one of the items above, email us at triadvc@wr.org

We also want to say a heart-felt THANK YOU to all who donated to our Year End campaign. How wonderful it is to see our community coming together and supporting their refugee, immigrant, and survivor neighbors. Thank you for partnering with us. We can't wait to see what God has for us in 2020!

The Power of Your Voice

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and our offices are always hard at work to prevent trafficking and empower survivors in our area. For more information on what human trafficking is, how it happens, and what you can do to help, click here

Tip of the Month

Empowerment and dignity can come simply from being heard and feeling seen. And that can start with you! We've put together some helpful tools for getting the conversation started, listening well, and navigating language barriers here.

Thank you for everything you do to support World Relief, to love and serve our clients, and to advocate for the vulnerable populations in our communities and around the world.
