What Seattle is talking about

After 22 years in downtown Seattle, Barnes & Noble shut the doors to its Pacific Place store over the weekend.

The reason for the closure remains vague, but B&N joins a handful of other longtime businesses — like Macy’s — that have recently called it quits.

GeekWire caught up with some of the store’s final customers last Friday, and many said they’re sad to see physical bookstores close. “One of the things I love about a bookstore is I can come in and roam and peruse,” Michael Brown said. “I can’t get that with Amazon.”

The good news? Seattle’s bibliophiles don’t have to wander too far to find an independent bookseller. Pike Place Market is home to five (yes, 5!) bookstores, and just a short hike away from downtown are Pioneer Square’s Arundel Books and the Elliott Bay Book Company on Capitol Hill.

In other news…

The first U.S. case of coronavirus has been confirmed in a Snohomish County man who traveled from Wuhan, China, to Sea-Tac International Airport last week. State health officials say the risk to the general public is low, but they’re monitoring people who may have come into contact with the infected individual. (KING 5)

Already miss the viaduct? This video from Crosscut and Seattle photographer Eirik Johnson is one of the loveliest tributes we’ve seen to our dearly departed chunk of steel and concrete. Keep the tissues handy. (Crosscut)

Frankie and Jo’s plant-based ice cream empire is expanding. The crazy-popular chain’s third location will open at University Village sometime this spring. 🍨 (Seattle Met)

Let's make the most of this month.

Today’s how-to: Making the most of January

When it comes to the months of the year, it’s no secret that January gets a bad rap. It’s the post-holiday hangover no one asked for. The sun sets way too early. And those New Year’s resolutions you set? Don’t worry, we’ve been putting them off, too.

But January is also a clean slate. It’s the first breath of fresh air on a crisp day. It’s believing in possibility. Why not start 2020 on an optimistic note? We decided to compile a few ways we’re making the most of January this year.

How are you embracing the first month of the new year? Head to our Instagram page to share your plans with us…and we’ll let you know when we’re ready to tackle February.
