The Meetup Minutes

Back to business!

New year, new socials. A well rounded discussion on the tables around what worked in 2019 and what people were looking to do for 2020.

Social Media for 2020

Looking forward to 2020 what better place to start than reviewing where you are with your marketing and social media and look at your strategy. A lot of the usual culprits came up, Content Creation, Facebook Ads, Google Shopping, Podcasts, Pinterest and the one to watch, Tik Tok.

We had a very diverse group of attendees, the majority in some way or other doing marketing for themselves or for companies.

Creating Content

First of all we had a good discussion on creating content, deciding what to write about can be the most difficult part of starting your content creation journey, tools like Google Keyword Planner and SEMRush can help to find out what’s popular and what people are searching for on search engines. This could be a good place to start if you’re reviewing your marketing strategy, thinking about what you want to communicate but also what will be of interest to your audience.

The penny dropped for one attendee when we discussed how broad topics can be for creating content and not just about the product or service you are selling. As long as it adds value and relevance to your customer's journey then it’s helpful for them and helpful for you because you will gain awareness from readers and watchers.

Another topics bit of content that people have been trying out have been podcasts. If you're interested in marketing podcasts and/or want to start one, check out the following:

  1. Blubrry - Podcast hosting with WordPress Plugin
  2. Business Wars Podcast
  3. Headliner - Create micro content for social from podcast
  4. Quicc - Transcripe your podcast
  5. Marketing Rebellion Podcast

An example of what a good content marketing looks like can be found here with example of what content topics and hubs are, as well as brilliant examples and templates to follow if your looking to write more here.

Influencer & Instagram

Instagram changes such as the disappearing of likes is an interesting play to watch happen and thoughts on the development of this is a hot topic at the moment.

What will this mean for influencers and people who depend on showing how many likes they get to indicate their value to brands. Will the likes disappearing mean that new social media channels such as Tik Tok are adopted more widely as an influencer platform. We shall wait and see.

Ecommerce & Paid Social

For 2020, the trend of online purchases and paid advertising on social media is only going to increase. Here are few resources to get you started:
  1. Facebook Blueprint - Learn about Facebook Ads
  2. Facebook Pixel - Access audiences from other Facebook accounts
  3. Google Shopping - Position your products in Google Search Results
  4. WhatsApp for Business - Promote on WhatsApp
  5. Booking.com Experiences - 3rd Party promotion post sales on Booking.com
  6. Modessy - Build your own marketplace
  7. Shopify - Build your own webstore and automate it
  8. Pinterest Ads - Create Promoted Pins

Organic Social

We talked about Facebook Groups and how they can be a great place to engage, learn and share content with audiences can be found in Facebook Groups. Searching on Facebook with a keyword and filtering out by groups is one way to find audiences relevant to you.

A few suggestions arouse on how to use LinkedIn effectively, suggestions were to use your personal account to promote a company's page as reach for company's pages without paying can be very limiting.
