February Technical Presentation:
Is Management Supporting our QMS or Our QMS Supporting Management?

Abstract:
ISO-9001:2015 §5.1 requires Top-Management to demonstrate leadership and commitment to the QMS (Quality Management System). We often hear that such leadership or support is not strong enough, or even not visible or present in some cases. Why is that? What is the result?
In this presentation we shall explore the experiences of Quality Professionals in various organizations and what can be, and has been, done to better integrate a QMS into the Business, and in fact make the QMS a critical and valued contributor.
Chuck Marsman will start with a short presentation on how Top-Management sees Quality Management, what Management wants from the QMS, and how we (as Quality Professionals) can more strongly enable the integration. Then, Gary Grubbs, Brian Mailhot, and Mike Szteliga will lead a panel-discussion in which several observations and positive experiences will be reviewed. We greatly encourage everyone attending to participate with questions or inputs.

Charles Marsman is a Quality professional with over 45 years' experience in Engineering and Manufacturing-, Technical-, and Quality-Management with Monsanto/Solutia and Rohm & Haas/Dow companies in the automotive, semiconductor, and consumer-goods industries. He currently manages Marsman Consulting, working with local and international companies in Quality Management and Business  Support. He holds a BSChE degree from Purdue University, and MEChE and MBA degrees from Tulane. He has been active I the ASQ-WMass section serving in the past as Section Chair and Treasurer, and currently as Program Chair.

He has 36.5 years' experience at Monsanto/Solutia/Eastman in engineering, maintenance, manufacturing and the last 20 years in Quality. Gary is semi-retired working part-time at Eastman as a contract quality manager for their world-wide automotive design facility in Springfield.
Brian Mailhot (CMQ/OE since 2000) holds a BS, Business administration, and an MBA with concentration in statistics. A quality professional since 1991, he is a current Senior Member and is an active Section Member Leader including current Chair-Elect. Brian has Quality improvement and Quality Management experience in commercial (ISO 9001), aerospace (AS9100), and medical device manufacturing (ISO 13485) in small to large company environments, family-owned to corporate/global business organizations.

Message from the Chair, Kurt Moore:  Welcome to 2020.  We’re looking forward to an exciting year for Section 0109 as the ASQ organization continues to evolve.  We’ve put together our plans for the year; wanted to point out a few of the highlights.

  • We plan to provide 5 high quality technical dinner meetings this year.  Watch for the dates and times, in our newsletter and in the Western Mass Section of myASQ  (https://my.asq.org/communities/home/136)
  • We want to grow our membership.  That’s why we will be continuing the “Bring a Friend” program.
  • We will be able to accept credit card payments at our dinner meetings (no more rushing to the ATM on the way to the dinner).
  • We are continuing to establish our presence on social media.  If you haven’t logged in to myASQ click on the link above and have a look.  Also, check out and like our page on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/ASQWMass/).
  • Finally, our Section can only be successful with the support of our membership.  As we try to grow our membership, we also want to grow our leadership.  Please, talk to one of the member leaders about getting involved.  The opportunities are numerous, and we’re sure that there’s one that will be a match for your time and talents.

We hope that your year will be happy, healthy and prosperous.  We look forward to seeing you at our Technical Dinner Meetings.

Thanks,

Kurt

A note of appreciation to Chuck Marsman, who chaired our section last year.
One of Western Mass section's most active volunteers, he served as our program chair at the same time.

Thank you, Chuck,
for all of your time and effort!

THE VOICE OF THE CUSTOMER IS BEING HEARD!
Since April of 2018, the VOC form has asked for suggestions for Topics and Round Table Discussions
Over the past nine dinner meetings, we have received over 70 suggestions!

They fall into three general categories:

Technical Skills – Topics on techniques / skills that increase the Body of Knowledge
in the Quality Profession.

Management Skills – Techniques on training, Management of the Quality System, and working with Management to get them on board!

Personal Skills – Personal Growth and Development, including those that can enhance your Professional Development track.

Some of this feedback has already been used in selecting programs for dinner meetings The overall collection will be used by the Chapter this year in its program selections.

Thank you!
