Do You Have 15 Minutes to Share Your Thoughts on BC’s Remaining Old-Growth Forest?

The BC Ministry of Forests wants our recommendations about new rules to govern the management of BC’s old-growth forests, with a deadline of 4pm on Friday January 31st. They are inviting us to complete a Questionnaire.
Conservation North has written a useful 4-page guidance sheet with suggestions for completing it, which you can find here.

BC’s old growth forests have been managed abysmally. The focus on seeing the forest simply as a source of fibre is highly detrimental, and has reduced the remaining old growth to a level that poses a high risk to wildlife, forest resilience, and ecological integrity.
The protection of our old growth forests requires:

1. Legislated protection of the remaining old growth. Start with a moratorium on harvesting in the most endangered forests, including the remaining productive, accessible stands. Follow this up with a science-based plan for the protection of all remaining primary forests.

2. A just transition away from the industrial harvesting for fibre and towards community-based forestry and secondary manufacturing focused on the second-growth forests, enabling a rapid transition to a sustainable economy. Transitioning the public forests to community control will help the change, and it will serve human communities, forests and wildlife better than the existing tenure system.

Follow these three easy steps to submit your feedback in ten minutes:
1. Click here for the online questionnaire.
2. Click here for suggestions on how to complete it.
3. Fill out the online questionnaire
