Musica Cotidiana

I was recently delighted to stumble on the Musica Cotidiana live music video series produced in Matanzas Cuba. The videos are expertly shot and recorded.

Lots of great videos to check out – afrocuban, beautiful nueva trova, ,a youth swing orchestra, and so on –– a really interesting mix. One of my favourite artists in the series was neuva trova singer Ariel Barrieros...

I’ve included below a video from the series that was shot on location at the Uriabón Efi abakuá potencia (temple). Uriabón Efi is a historic abakuá lodge – abakuá being a men’s multual aid/secret society with origins in African ekpé from the Calabar / cross-river delta area of Nigeria and Cameroon. Abakuá has had a strong influence on Cuban music, dance, culture and history. Some really nice music and dance in this video...

1313 this Thursday night

If you didn’t get enough Cuban in your dance diet at the Free to Move Cuban night on Saturday – thanks to everyone for coming out, by the way!  –  we’re jumping back into those warm Caribbean waters again at 1313 this Thursday January 30th – with healthy portions of bachata, merengue , linear-friendly salsa, reggaeton and more thrown to  appease the timba vegetarians in the 1313 crowd!

  • Feb 8-23Rueda in Playa Del Carmen - very open-ended opportunity to do and learn rueda in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico with people from Boston Rueda
  • Feb 25 - Mar 3 - Festival de la Salsa En Cuba - 5th edition of the Havana salsa festival that Maykel Blanco organizes. Workshops with dance Cuban dance superstars Maykel Fonts and Jenyselt Galata Calvo and concerts from a literal who’s who of Cuban timba plus an as yet unnamed international artist.
  • Feb 13-16 - Salsa Rueda Festival - in San Francisco. The 2020 schedule is not up yet but you can see from the 2019 schedule that it will be an impressive program
  • Mar 7-15 -  7 days in Habana - Package tour includes dance instruction, clubs, activities, transportation to activities, airport transfers, accommodation, breakfast, dinner etc – put together by Julio Montero from Casino Tradicional
  • Mar 15-27  - 10 days across Cuba - Package tour includes dance instruction, clubs, activities, transportation to activities, airport transfers, accommodation, breakfast, dinner etc – put together by Julio Montero from Casino Tradicional
  • Mar 29-Apr 5 2020 - Havana Dance Experience 2020 - Havana dance package includes accommodations, breakfast, a SIM card, classes and taxi dancers as well as some daytime activities.
  • Apr 20-26 2020 - Ritmo Cuba – includes 7 days of workshops and classes (30 hours of classes I believe, with four tracks to choose from), tours, a pool party, a beach party, as well as admission every night to the best clubs in the city with top bands in Cuba
  • May 29-31 2020Rueda Fest - in Brighton UK - has some intriguing workshops on rueda in all kinds of funky formations and more
  • Jun 20-28 7 days in Santiago - Package tour includes dance instruction, clubs, activities, transportation to activities, airport transfers, accommodation, breakfast, dinner etc – put together by Julio Montero from Casino Tradicional
  • Aug 28-30 Timba Cuba Festival - Portorož (Slovenia) – this is a festival at a beachfront hotel apparently organized or curated by Yeni Molinet, and features a who’s who of Cuban teachers including Alberto Valdes, Yeni Molinet, Jenyselt Galata, Maykel Fonts, Hector Oviedo, etc. Parties, workshops, live music, DJs, a boat trip. This looks incredible. 
Halifax Events
  • Feb 15 Son Latino at Sura Lounge – great drinks here, food sounds awesome too. Staff was very friendly to a total dance takeover throughout the entire space last time and Son Latino sounded great! 
  • Feb 28 - Son Latino at the Carleton

  • Saturdays - Haliente - social with linear salsa, bachata, kizomba, WCS, etc $5

  • Last Saturday of the month 6-9pm - Free to Move Cuban Night Free class with Brigitte on various topics @ 6pm, 100% Cuban music for dancing and suelta from 7-pm. $5 
  • 3rd Sunday - Cuban session at Alderney – music by Plan Ashe with dancing
