Blog post: Rethinking Power in Education

Rethinking power in education is healthy, necessary, and an important step towards a more equitable system—which is why we have chosen this as our theme for the year and for the 2020 Teacher-Powered Schools National Conference.

This year we challenge all of you to join us in rethinking power in education. Can we reimagine teaching, leading, learning? Can we build structures, systems, and practices that support the innovative, the creative, the collaborative? Can we create an equitable system? Can we resist reverting to the status quo when things are hard?

Welcome to the inventory!

The number of teacher-powered schools across the country is growing — with many of them inventoried on teacherpowered.org so that teacher teams may discover peers, partners, and friends they otherwise would not.

Welcome to the newest schools in the inventory, Brooklyn Transition Center and Jennings Community School!

The Brooklyn Transition Center prepares students with varying abilities for adulthood through innovative programming, simulated work-based learning labs, access to wellness, authentic community experiences, and hands-on, functional academics. Through person-centered life planning with families and partner organizations, they empower students to become active, independent, and well rounded members of the community.
At Jennings Community School, students have to think, solve problems, and interact with others in situations as close to real life as possible. They establish goals, create learning plans, establish courses of action, and are held accountable for results. Teachers see themselves as “facilitators of learning” — helping students be responsible citizens, achieve fulfilling careers, become self-directed, lead healthy lives, and become lifelong learners.
