Drinking Great Beer for a Good Cause
There are several great events coming up this weekend that benefit a good cause.
If you head to West Craft’s Sunday Service at Prototype, amongst other beers (see events section) they will be pouring Arthur from Hill Farmstead (named world’s best brewery by Ratebeer), and net proceeds and tips will be donated to the Vancouver Food Bank. They will also be pouring Australia’s Wildflower Brewing & Blending, with net sales and tips being donated to NSW Rural Fire Services.
On that subject, there’s a number of wildfire fundraisers coming up for Australia Day, including events at Brewhall, The Beaver and Moose’s Down Under in Vancouver, Howe Sound in Squamish, and Slackwater in Penticton. The Slackwater event will even have Vegemite on toast for an added touch of authenticity.
Go have a drink and contribute to a good cause!
Big Beer Takes Another Craft Brewery
Down in the U.S., it looks like we’ve lost another craft brewery to big beer, as Detroit’s Atwater Brewery & Tap House has been acquired by Tenth and Blake Beer Company, the U.S. craft division of Molson Coors Beverage Company.
Atwater Brewery is one of Michigan’s largest brewers and is highly regarded in the Michigan craft beer scene, especially for their German-style lagers, and unique ales like their Dirty Blonde and Vanilla Java Porter. Recently they also jumped on the hard seltzer bandwagon.
Tenth and Blake’s other craft acquisitions include Saint Archer, Blue Moon, Terrapin, Hop Valley, Revolver, and Jacob Leinenkugel.
Beer As a Support Animal?
On the lighter side of things, a man in Brooklyn, New York has attempted to register a pint of beer as an “emotional support animal.” The style of beer in question is a 473 ml, lightly hopped session IPA served in a regular bar pint glass.
He says of the attempt, “I’m not permitted a dog in my building, so I thought an emotional support beer would be more appropriate. It helps alleviate my anxiety and is a cost effective way to manage stress.” Going on to say, “It’s a delicious beer and at a reasonable 5% ABV, can be consumed without hindering hand-eye coordination, mental ability or judgement. I’ve had trouble trying to take the pint onto public buses and into places of business, so I had the idea to get it registered.”
An employee from the USA Service Dog registration site has said that the attempt will get him nowhere, but so far he has not been approached by law enforcement while waiting for the bus with a pint of beer in hand.
Some one buy this man a pint! Oh wait, he already has one!
Reverse Guinness?
A UK craft brewery called Team Toxic has released a beer called Sinistral, which is being nicknamed the “reverse Guinness.” It’s a milky white stout with a distinctive black head. People are trying to guess what adjunct they used to create the head, with many guessing incorrectly that it is squid ink. All they will reveal is that it is “completely edible, natural and vegan.”
It looks hideous, if you ask me, but I am morbidly curious. Also, what kind of statement are you making if you drink reverse Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day? Hmm…
