Safer Internet Day 2020
‘Together for a better internet’ is the theme of this year’s Safer Internet Day which will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 11th.

An EU wide initiative that is facilitated in Ireland by Website (see below), Safer Internet Day promotes safer internet for all users, especially young people.

The aim of the day is to promote respectful use of the internet and challenging people, the young and not so young, to ‘Think Before you Post’ and respect yourself and each other online.

‘While many young people enjoy the internet and social media, for some it can be a dark and lonely place,’ explained Dermot Troy, Limerick Youth Service.

‘We can post comments and photos without realising the impact they can have on some people,’ said Dermot adding ‘once you post online you need to realise that it is no longer private.’

Young people and parents who would like more information and support on web safety are asked to contact LYS at yib@limerickyouthservice.org

LYS Youth Information Service
Webwise
Webwise promotes the safer use of the internet through information and awareness campaigns that target young people, parents, teachers and those who work with teenagers and children.

Webwise works with young people in developing and disseminating resources that help teachers, instructors and youth workers integrate internet safety into teaching and programmes in their schools and youth organisations.

With the help of their Youth Advisory Panel, Webwise has developed youth oriented awareness resources and campaigns that address topics such as cyber bullying and online safety.

The project, coordinated by the Office for Internet Safety, aims to develop national initiatives promoting the safer use of electronic media and enhance protection of the vulnerable – particularly children – against the downside of the internet.

Webwise is the Irish Internet Safety Awareness Centre which is co-funded by the Department of Education & Skills and is co-financed by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility.

Webwise is part of the PDST (Professional Development Service for Teachers) which promotes and supports the integration of ICT (Information & Communications Technology) in teaching and learning in primary and secondary schools.
