Founders' Day Luncheon

Reminder: The Founder’s Day registration deadline is FEBRUARY 6th! Please be sure to mail in your check and forms or bring them to the February LWPTSA Council General Membership meeting.

Founders' Day Luncheon will be held Friday, February 28, 2020 at Sahalee Country Club. This Founders' Day is also LWPTSA Council's 40th anniversary celebration. We are excited to be hosting a Region 2 Winter Conference at the LWSD Resource Center on Tuesday, February 25. You are invited to join us! Meet Andrew Estep, WSPTA Executive Director and participate in the Listening Tour, Nominating Committee training, network with PTA leaders from across the region, particpate in classes and trainings to meet your training requirement and enhance your leadership skills. A message from Andrew Estep, WSPTA Executive Director: Your voice is important in helping us shape the future of Washington State PTA and the work we do for all children. Tell us how things are going for you and your PTA. The Washington State PTA Listening Tour is part of the 2020-2023 strategic planning process. A panel of state board directors and other volunteer leaders will be there to hear your concerns and the challenges that you face. Our executive director, Andrew Estep, will moderate the session. Your honest and heartfelt answers will be integrated into the state’s plans for the next three years.

Nominating Committee Training & Help

LWPTSA has scheduled two nominating committee training sessions, open to any PTA board member or nominating committee member: 
  • Monday, February 10, from noon - 2PM at LWSD Resource Center
  • Tuesday, February 25, 12:30PM at LWSD Resource Center, registration required
Training sessions in other councils:
  • Tuesday, February 6, 9:30 – 11:00AM, Bellevue
  • Monday, March 2, 10:00 – 11:30AM, Mercer Island
Presidents, Nom Comm members and interested board members are encouraged to download the handbook from the WSPTA website.  If you've forgotten the credentials, please contact your AVP.

Special Education Fair - February 25

Come check out and talk to vendors offering after school, summer, and other recreational activities and other services to students on IEPs, 504s and IHPs, and their families. Children welcome. Persons with disabilities who anticipate needing accommodations, those who need an interpreter or who have questions about access may email us at specialeducation@lwptsa.net in advance of the event.

Opioid Awareness & Prevention Panel

If you missed the Opioid Awareness and Prevention Panel in December you can watch a video from the event courtesy of the Lake Washington School District. The panel includes representatives from King County EMS, Kirkland Police Department, Youth Eastside Services more. They cover topics of drugs, alcohol and opioid addiction, the extremely dangerous opioids currently out there and how addiction progresses, what 1st responders are seeing first hand, interventions, and finally what parents can do. Watch the video online.

LWPTSA Scholarships Available

The Lake Washington PTSA Council is pleased to roll out its 2020 Scholarship Program! Each year in the spring, Council offers several student scholarships and two $500 staff scholarships. This year’s Student Scholarship Program will include 13 scholarships of $1,250 each:

  • 8 Merit scholarships
  • 1 LWEA/Bates scholarship
  • 1 Perseverance scholarship
  • 1 Turn Around scholarship
  • 1 L.E. Scarr 2 year, technical or vocational scholarship
  • 1 at-large scholarship

Applications for both staff and student scholarships are due by NOON on April 2, 2020. The Scholarship Program is funded by money raised at the Council’s annual Scholarship Basket Auction, by annual donations from the 44 PTSAs in the LWSD and LWEA, and by donations from the greater community.

Join National PTA in coming together for a better internet. Learn how your PTA can host a Safer Internet Day Celebration. View NPTA's PTA Connected toolkits and get ready to join the live event on February 11, 2020 via live streaming video.

WSPTA Standards of Excellence

Does your PTA: Have regular meetings, communicate to your members regularly, have goals and objectives, and programs to meet those goals? Do you have an active membership campaign and does your PTA recognize volunteers and present awards? Does your PTA follow the Standards of Affiliation? Does your PTA attend council meetings or share information from WSPTA and NPTA? If you answered, ‘yes’, (and we know that most of our PTAs do all of these things, and more!) your PTA is an excellent candidate to apply for the WSPTA Standards of Excellence Award! Entry deadline: 3/1/2020. If you have any questions, or need assistance in filling out the forms, please email Brandi Comstock at EVP@LWPTSA.net  Details and applications for additional WSPTA awards are located on the WSPTA website.

January Board To-Do List

  • Conduct a mid-year financial review in January. Appoint a committee and set a date to do the review.
  • Review WSPTA Awards of Excellence awards. Applications are due March 1.
  • Appoint a nomination committee if you haven't already done so.
  • Engage in a winter membership campaign. The WSPTA membership growth contest runs from Jan 1 - Feb 14, 2020. No entry form needed!
  • Provide 1099-Misc forms to independent contractors.
  • File annual combined excise tax form by January 31 to remit sales/use tax if applicable.
  • Was your PTA incorporated in January?  If so, then your annual Corporation Renewal is due on 1/31. The annual corporation report is due regardless of your PTA’s annual income and is separate from the Charitable Organization Registration/ Renewal.
