Colorado's Gardening Greats by Panayoti Kelaidis

Don’t miss this inspiring, free lecture: Colorado’s Gardening Greats: Saco DeBoer and the Visionaries Who Shaped our Western Garden Philosophy by one of Colorado’s gardening legends, Panayoti Kelaidis, Senior Curator and Director of Outreach at Denver Botanic Gardens. Kelaidis has designed plantings for many of the gardens at DBG and is particularly known for his plantings at the Rock Alpine Garden. The award-winning plant explorer and gardener has introduced hundreds of native ornamentals from throughout the Western United States to general horticulture. He has collected seeds from steppe regions like Colorado throughout the world. Many of his plant introductions are available through Plant Select®.

Kelaidis’ presentation will follow the towering figures who brought gardening as we practice it today to Colorado - mainly two dutchmen, Saco DeBoer and M. Walter Pesman. These two landscape artists, writers and gardeners shaped most of Denver’s parks, parkways, schools and the neighborhoods around Park Hill and especially City Park. Their lives and accomplishments are fascinating.

With its emphasis on DeBoer who designed City Park’s Lily Pond and the DeBoer Canyon and Waterway, Kelaidis’ talk will kick off “Color Field at the Lily Ponds,” an art installation conceived by Denver artists, Sarah and Josh Palmeri and sponsored by the RNO, City Park Friends and Neighbors. The innovative work will draw attention to the historic Lily Pond space (SW of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science) through a colorful installation of 6,000 painted gardening stakes in the seedbeds of the drained ponds. The six uniquely shaped seedbeds will transform into abstract forms of bright colors, bringing attention to this underutilized area of City Park and boosting efforts to bring the area back to life. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Denver Zoo, Denver Arts and Venues, and Denver Dept. of Parks and Recreation are major supporters of the project.
