This week, Governor Little signed an executive order providing eight weeks of paid parental leave to Idaho State workers. This is a monumental hallmark for Idaho working families. The United States is one of the only developed nations that does not guarantee its citizens paid parental leave. Until now, only unpaid paternity leave was offered for state workers. Now, fathers will have the opportunity to spend quality time bonding with their newborns. Medical professionals have acknowledged the many positive psychological and physical effects from having both parents present during the early stages of a child’s life. Furthermore, offering paternity leave is a big step towards gender equality. Equal parental leave helps society move away from the perception of childcare as a female responsibility. Studies have shown men that take paternity leave are more likely to continue being involved in child caring responsibilities, such as feeding and diapering. There are positive outcomes for businesses that offer paid parental leave as well. Mothers are more likely to return to work sooner when they have support from their partners. I would like to applaud Governor Little for his excellent leadership and putting Idaho working families first.
