Man Cave

February 5

What would you do if you were the last man on earth, but not SURE if you were the last man on earth? What sort of messages would you send out to your imagined fellow last men? And how long would you wait for a reply?

Burrowed into a Hobbit home in northern Canada, our hero broadcasts into a microphone for whomever might yet be listening. Realizing that there may not be anyone out there, he turns his aim toward warning whatever Klingons, Vulcans or Tralfamadorians might still be receiving radio signals, telling them how not to do what we did! Realizing that, at the far end, they may hear this disembodied voice as God talking to them, he works his way through a new Ten Commandments for a changing planet.

Along with a stirring rallying cry for saving the planet, "Man Cave" walks a line that draws chortles and laughs in the face of the deadly future that looms ahead...

Apocalypse Not Now!

February 6

Clara York's Apocalypse Not Now is an epicly relevant California tale about an agoraphobic former hand model who is forced out of her closet when a fire threatens to burn her shitty neighborhood.

York puts on a clinic in laughter, delivery, timing and character while at the same time depicting all the anxiety of our times: The worry about growing older, the latent fear that Los Angeles is careening on the brink of chaos, and the isolation of the individual in a city with so many people.

This is a rockin' piece and a helluva thing to watch the brutal effects of Southern California's unending fires and post-election mania on a former hand model there's a laugh hidden in every minute of this show.

Love to Sing? Join the San Fernando Valley Chorale!

February 11 Ongoing

Love to sing? The San Fernando Valley Chorale offers a unique opportunity to sing and perform with a well established and highly regarded community chorale. Beginning February 11, we rehearse each Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Cross Lutheran Church, 10000 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills, CA 91345.

New singers are welcome to join us as we launch a new season of singing, collaborative learning, camaraderie and fun. “We are a very social group - we love everybody,” says longtime director, Conrad Immel, who carefully selects original and crowd-pleasing music from both popular and classical works. Past performances have included show tunes from "The Music Man," "Man of LaMancha," and "Carousel;" classical pieces from Bach, Brahms and more, as well as spiritual, rock n' roll, jazz, and country. No audition is necessary, just a love of music and a willingness to share your gift of singing and make new friends.

The Chorale, a non-profit,  non-sectarian group of men and women singers, performs two concerts annually - in the winter and spring.  Dues are required each semester to cover Chorale expenses, with some scholarships available. Chorale members and guests enjoy socializing at a potluck each season. Check us out on the web:  www.sfvchorale.blogspot.com or www.facebook.com/sfvchorale. Show Summaries:
You Can't Take it With You - Sweet-natured Alice Sycamore falls for banker's son Tony Kirby, but when she invites her snooty prospective in-laws to dinner to give their blessing to the marriage, Alice's peculiar extended family -- including philosophical grandfather Martin Vanderhof, hapless fledgling ballerina sister Essie, and fireworks enthusiast father, Paul -- might be too eccentric for the staid Kirbys.

The Producers - Down and out producer Max Bialystock, who was once the toast of Broadway, trades sexual favors with old ladies for cash contributions. Max's new accountant, Leo Bloom offhandedly muses that if Max found investors for a new production that turned into a flop, he could legally keep all the extra money. The duo begins to put together the worst play possible, titled "Springtime for Hitler", with a terrible director and a hippie-freak star. The most Tony Awards ever received by a single production in 2001 with 12 awards, including Best Musical.

25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee - An eclectic group of sixth graders arrives at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for very different reasons. In hilarious, touching, and catchy songs, each speller reveals his/her hopes, struggles, and passions as they make their way through the competition.

The Music Man, Jr - There’s trouble in River City! When smooth-talking, con man Harold Hill arrives in tight knit, small town Iowa, he expects to swindle its residents with his elaborate moneymaking scheme. The Music Man, Jr. is an All-American, crowd-pleasing, charming musical with iconic musical numbers.

Harvey - Elwood P. Dowd insists on including his friend Harvey in all his sister Veta’s social gatherings. Trouble is, Harvey is an imaginary six-and-a-half-foot-tall rabbit.

Bye Bye Birdie -  the year is 1958, and the much-adored rock-and-roll idol -- Conrad Birdie -- has been drafted into the US army. His songwriter and agent, Albert, and Albert’s secretary and some-time girlfriend, Rosie, hatch a plan for a farewell performance to take place on The Ed Sullivan Show.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - 15-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain.  He is determined to solve the mystery of who murdered his neighbor's dog, Wellington.  But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a thrilling journey that upturns his world.  Rated R for Language.

9 to 5 - Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains "otherwise engaged," the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can't she?

Adult Literacy Class

February 5 Ongoing

More than 30 million adults in the United States cannot read, write, or do basic math above a third-grade level. — ProLiteracy

Children whose parents have low literacy levels have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves. These children are more likely to get poor grades, display behavioral problems, have high absentee rates, repeat school years, or drop out. — National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER)

75 percent of state prison inmates did not complete high school or can be classified as low literate. — Rand Report: Evaluating the Effectiveness of Correctional Education

Low literacy is said to be connected to over $230 billion a year in health care costs because almost half of Americans cannot read well enough to comprehend health information, incurring higher costs. — American Journal of Public Health

Blackface in Modern Media: Author Talk & Historian Conversation

February 6

6PM
North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Regional Library, 5211 Tujunga Avenue, Los Angeles, CA, 91601

Two historians discuss how and why mocking African Americans was acceptable in recorded music, radio, film and television into the 1950s.

Blackface has been a racially-based form of costume in America since the days of minstrel stage shows in the nineteenth century. Award-winning historian, author and former TV executive Tim Brooks has devoted 20 years to researching and documenting the history of black music and how blackface and minstrel shows mocking African American culture transitioned from the stage to recorded music, radio, motion pictures and television.

Perhaps surprisingly, the leading market in the country for shows such as "Dixie Showboat" was Los Angeles, in the 1950s.

Brooks' new book, The Blackface Minstrel Show in Mass Media: 20th Century Performances on Radio, Records, Film and Television (McFarland, 2019), describes the controversies surrounding individual shows in mainstream media, as well as how the minstrel show was finally, and abruptly, driven off the air. A double-CD reissue of historical minstrel show recordings from the early 1900s is being released by Archeophone Records.

The North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Regional Branch Library, located at 5211 Tujunga Ave., will host and the Friends of the North Hollywood Library will sponsor an illustrated presentation by Brooks, followed by a conversation by him with African American historian Bill Doggett.

A music historian and archivist, performing arts producer, and diversity specialist in the Bay Area, Doggett was commissioned in 2015 by the Recorded Sound Division of The Library of Congress to produce a project for The National Jukebox on Race and Early Sound Recordings. In 2012, he was recognized by the Friends of Negro Spirituals with The Heritage Keepers Award for Exhibition Curation and Archives.

An audience Q&A will conclude the program on Thursday, February 6, at 6 PM.

This event is presented for purposes of public education and civil discourse, and open to older teens and adults of all backgrounds. Because seating is limited, free tickets are available on Eventbrite.

Memory Cafe

February 15

Senior Concerns to Offer Memory Café
On Saturday, February 15, 2020

As part of its commitment to provide support for seniors with dementia and their family caregivers, Senior Concerns is offering quarterly Memory Cafes, with the next Memory Café scheduled for Saturday, February 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Senior Concerns, 401 Hodencamp Road in Thousand Oaks. Lunch will be provided.

A Memory Café is a social gathering where people with memory loss, along with their caregivers and/or friends and family, can come together in a safe, supportive and engaging environment. The Café gives participants a welcome break from the disease and the opportunity to socialize with others.

Not only do Memory Cafés help reduce social isolation, they can also unite people facing similar challenges. Getting together regularly with a group of friends can bring a sense of normalcy to a life that often becomes extremely focused on disease and disability. The Café can provide an opportunity to give and receive support, share ideas, and connect with others.

“We are excited to bring a Memory Café to the community,” says Martha Shapiro, Director of Programs at Senior Concerns. “We hope to provide an opportunity for people with dementia and their families to connect with one another and provide a network of support.”

Space is limited and reservations are required. Please call Senior Concerns at 805-497-0189 to reserve your spot.

Ongoing

The Senior Companion Program recruits active, fixed income seniors to assist other seniors in their homes.

The goals of the program are two-fold:
   (1) to help seniors live as independently as possible.
   (2) to provide fixed income seniors with a meaningful service opportunity and a modest source of income.

Senior Companion volunteers assist with activities of daily living such as shopping, preparing meals, running errands, and providing companionship to alleviate the loneliness that so many homebound seniors experience.

Information & Retirement

IN RETIREMENT,

GUARANTEES MATTER

You've worked hard, retirement should be easy. You worked through every scenario that retirement could throw at you. You diversified your portfolio. You saved and saved some more. Now, all that's left is to tap that nest egg and turn your assets into a stream of income that can provide the retirement you've always wanted. That's what a sound retirement strategy is about, right?

The problem is, without guarantees, this stream of retirement income will face the risk of running out or diminishing in value due to common challenges that every retiree needs to be aware of.

LIFE EXPECTANCY. How long will you live?
INFLATION. Will your retirement income keep pace with inflation?
MARKET UNCERTAINTY. Your retirement savings in a down market.
WITHDRAWAL RATE. Will your savings last?
HEALTH CARE COSTS. Will health care costs deplete your savings?

Want more flexibility with qualified money?
Already taking RMDs, and want to reduce taxable income?
Do you have qualified money that, initially, won't be used during retirement, but may want to use the funds for income in the future?
Do you have any concerns about running out of money later in life?

I would like to introduce myself.
My name is Arica Ohanisian, and I am a licensed agent with New York Life. I am delighted to be a resource for all of your retirement needs on Suddenly 65.
