Happy New Year to our New Start Family!

Ready for your NEW START this year?
We hope you had a restful and joyous winter. It’s certainly been a little while, hasn’t it? 2019 was an exciting year of transition for New Start. We’re thrilled to have completed our first summer back in the Thrive Center, home to other great programs such as First Cats, Fostering Success, and our Cultural Learning Communities. And with the turn of a new year, we couldn’t be more excited for our 52nd summer in 2020. Under the university’s strategic plan, we’re continuing to offer the Pell Promise, offering a new math course, and expect to welcome 425 students to campus this coming summer!
Here's a quick glance at the archives for New Start 2019!
We know there are a lot of photos out there, so if you have any you want to share with us from your Peer Mentor classes, performances at BLAST, your time at Monte Carlo, or anything else you loved about your time in New Start, send them our way and we might feature them in a future newsletter. Our historical archives go all the way back to the 1960's!

Do you have any favorite memories from New Start?
Working for New Start was and continues to be one the best things I have done in college. Every day I got to witness wonderful moments of bonding and learning, but a memory that really stands out was watching one of my students absolutely  knock it out of the park at B.L.A.S.T. Seeing him use and be recognized for his amazing talent was really satisfying as an instructor and peer mentor. (He won first place!)

What are you most excited about for 2020?
Something that I loved about New Start last summer was the energy that students and staff bring to their roles. I am excited for getting to know and engage with a new community of returners and incoming staff, and to share the experience with the 2020 cohort of students.

What are three words you would use to describe New Start?
Community. Growth. Dedication.

Do you have any favorite memories from New Start?
Here’s a throwback from my undergrad years: There were five Peer Mentors who became really good friends, and we decided to form a boy band for BLAST 2010. We choreographed a whole dance, practiced after we facilitated our classes, and we called ourselves “Out of Sync” as a joke. But the night of the talent show, a ton of students rushed the stage and drowned out the music, so we couldn’t hear the audio. Therefore, we really and truly were “Out of Sync.”

What are you most excited about for New Start 2020?
Between Welcome Weekend and the final Awards Ceremony, the energy changes. There’s a huge shift and the students become a family, the staff become lifelong friends and mentors, and individuals walk a little taller when they find their home. I don’t think there’s one particular moment when we notice this—it’s a million little moments. I’m excited to watch for those everyday transformations this year!

What are three words you would use to describe New Start?
Magic. Family. Forever.
