WE'RE A LITTLE OBSESSED WITH YOU

A Confession from the Faculty and Staff of Latino Studies at UT

Let's be honest. You don't think about us when you're gone. We know you're busy hanging out with high school friends, catching up on your Netflix queue, eating at all the home spots you missed during the semester (RGV kids are hitting up El Pato while El Paso kids are stocking up on the good Food City tortillas). Did we cross your minds? No?

It's okay. No hard feelings. But can we confess something? We thought about you.

What do you want to eat at Celebración this year? (We went with al pastor tacos from Vaquero Taquero.) What perspectives on "cancel culture" can we add without stepping on the toes of our amazing campus student groups? (The kind we have in spades--faculty perspectives!) Which topics in your lives could benefit from the kind of real talk that you rely on us for? (Grad School. Grad School. A thousand times, grad school.)

I can't stress enough how much time and energy we put into making sure we do right by you. We owe it to all of you to do our best work both when you're here and when you're not. So, call us creepy, but we literally can't stop thinking about you...

An Event in Honor of the Almighty Trompo

Well, kind of. When we sat down to come up with a theme for our annual welcome back party, we couldn't get the image of the trompo out of our heads.

That magnificent spinning tornado of meat, more religious statue than food apparatus, dripping oil and grease like the weeping Virgin they found in New Mexico--it's downright inspiring, and a perfect way to conjure a bit of new-semester fervor among us. For a deeper dive into food iconography, I defer to the experts. For now, I am but a mere advertiser using a trompo to say:

Come for the al pastor from Vaquero Taquero, our new spring merch items, and the grand announcement of our Sam Z. Coronado Poster Competition winners, and don't forget to enter the raffle to win a trompo-shaped piñata that we're having made special for this event!!!

You're More Interesting Than You Think

Memories--not just for the 'Gram.

Did you notice our new email design? In addition to this new look, we're adding a special Thursday email to the lineup. Don't worry, it'll be a fun, quickie email that aims to deliver some original content and not just the standard, self-promotional fare. Starting this Thursday, we'll debut one of our three new features, which will alternate every week:

1. "Meet Your Vecinos," featuring local Latinxs and their answers to the famously personal Proust Questionnaire. We figured that the best way to get to know Austin is by introducing you to some of our favorite Austinites!

2. "Good News/Bad News," in which the hard-working leaders of your Latino Studies department offer their commentary on a current topic of their choosing. And, given the state of the news today, there's likely a little 'good' and a little 'bad.'

3. "Cuando Cuentas Cuentos," in honor of the Spanish tongue-twister, featuring YOU. IT'S YOU, WE'RE FEATURING! We're collecting community stories, folk wisdom, memories, photos, recipes, etc. It's time to dig up those embarrassing glamour shots from high school!

1. Like kids? Interested in research? Then you'd make a perfect volunteer for this project in need of lab assistance: ‘Fitbit’ for Babies, Sensing Daily Activity in Development. All majors welcome!

2. Future teachers out there should check out these sessions in Spanish and English on the teaching of indigeneity in K-12, especially, dual language/bilingual and Ethnic Studies education. This Friday and Saturday at the MACC.

3. Undergrads: start working on those Mellon Mays Fellowship apps! Need more info? Attend one of two info sessions this Friday.
