Bixby Elementary School
- Long Beach USD -

Bixby Elementary is an existing and active school requiring a complete modernization including all new electrical service and distribution as well as new lighting, HVAC, fire alarm, security, clock and PA.

This is our second school with the same Balfour Beatty team as our Lowell Elementary School project we finished in 2019.  The project is being completed in phases and students are occupying the campus as work is being completed.  We have kept the school operational by installing temporary power and lighting.

The biggest challenge we face on this project is installing new electrical equipment and wiring alongside existing and fully functioning electrical components that need to stay in place and remain operational throughout the project.  The blending of old and new work can be challenging but our Foreman, Rick Glancy, and his crew have been doing a great job.

The job is in its third phase and is progressing nicely. We have completed the more challenging aspects of the project already. Rick and his crew have been meeting all deadlines and continue to meet or exceed all expectations we have for them.

2019 David Avila Memorial Award Recipient

Anthony Pagdilao

This year’s David Avila Memorial Award recipient is Anthony Pagdilao!  Anthony has been with Champion almost 13 years, starting with Suburban in the Service Department.  He was the Foreman on several large jobs prior to being promoted to Field Superintendent. He is a strong leader and committed to making sure we are successful in everything we do. He is always available to lend his guidance and encouragement by making time to develop and teach every person in a positive way, from the 1st year Apprentice to the seasoned Foreman.
This year was unique because all the prior winners agreed that Anthony was the guy. The fact that they nominated their supervisor speaks volumes of his character and leadership. Click here to watch the video.

Honoring our Apprentices
To honor the memory of David Avila (1958-2015), Home Depot gift cards were given to our Apprentices to help with the cost of tools they will need with their career.

We were challenged by Stronghold Engineering to compete in the 2nd Annual Heart & Stroke Walk Kickball Tournament on Saturday, October 5, 2019, at Big League Dreams in Perris. 32 teams competed for bragging rights. We may not have taken the Kickball Tournament but we played hard and earned 2nd. Great job to our team!

Plug into the President

Tom Rowden

Prepare today for what you want to do tomorrow. 2020 will present a lot of opportunities for all of us and when those opportunities arise, we need to be ready and prepared to respond. One of the ways we do that at Champion is our partnership and investment into Associated Builders and Contractors of Southern California (ABC). ABC is instrumental in providing training for our workforce (amongst many other things) and provides Champion with a state of the art state approved apprenticeship program to train all of our apprentices and the future workforce in the industry. The state approved apprenticeship program is a 4 ½ to 5 year commitment. To graduate the program, each apprentice must work a minimum of 8,000 hours of on the job training and complete 8 semesters (640 hours) of in classroom training to graduate the program. It is a huge accomplishment which creates many opportunities for the graduated apprentices.

It was a great night to celebrate the accomplishments and hard work each of these students put in for the last 4 ½ to 5 years. And these, now certified Journey Person Electricians, have set a solid foundation for their career. Congratulations to all of the graduates, we are excited to see your advancements in your careers at Champion.
Congratulations Apprentices
In September 2019, Champion Electric had the privilege of graduating 7 of our own apprentices from the program. Carlos Bencomo, Nicholas Comfort, Andrew Cruz, Robert Hoppe, Quinn Jones, Ryan Jordan and Louis Osuna. Four of which, received the Perfect Attendance award and our very own Carlos Bencomo received the Recognition of Excellence award given to the top student of the class.
