Utah Beer News | January 2020

|
Welcome to 2020.
First, a thank you is in order. Without the support of the Utah craft beer community in general (and, specifically, subscribers such as yourself), I couldn't do what I do at Utah Beer News.
Thank you for making the first full year of Utah Beer News an exceptional one.
That said, to ensure that I'm writing about and sharing stories that are important to you, it would mean a lot if you could please take five minutes to complete a survey.
Not only will you be helping to shape the coverage of Utah Beer News, but you also could win one of four (4) prize packs valued at roughly $50 each! Thank you in advance.
And now, on with the newsletter...
The year ahead will be hard-pressed to match what turned out to be a remarkable 2019 in Utah beer. But I said the same thing this time last year, and look how that turned out.
With our feet firmly planted in 5%, new breweries on the horizon and existing establishments continuing to brew great beer, I'm confident Utah craft beer drinkers will be well served over the next 11+ months.
As we embark on another year, Utah Beer News will continue to bring you stories of brewers, breweries, and everyday imbibers who contribute to the Utah craft beer community.
If this is your first time receiving our monthly dispatch, welcome! If you're a longtime subscriber, thank you for sticking with us. As always, feel free to drop a line to let me know what you think.
Here's to 2020 and a year of drinking good beer!
Cheers,
Tim

Bonneville Brewery: An All-Star in Tooele
|
|
Bonneville Brewery is situated 35 miles west of Salt Lake City. Its Tooele location, coupled with the fact that most of its beers are available only at the brewery or a handful of All Star Bowling & Entertainment centers, mean Bonneville needs to "work a little bit harder to get our name and our product in front of people," says Dave Watson, Bonneville's longtime head brewer.
That they've done. And, as Utah beer drinkers have found, Bonneville's beers are worth seeking out.
🎙 BONUS: Listen to our full interview with Dave Watson as part of the Utah Beer News Podcast. Hear how he got his start in brewing and what differentiates Bonneville from other breweries, as well as his thoughts on the overall Utah craft beer scene.

Year in Beer: A Look Back at 2019
|
|
We called 2018 the Year of the Brewery in Utah. And 2019, I believe, will go down as the Year of Beer in the Beehive State. Take a look at our top articles and podcast episodes from the year that was, and glance at several notable happenings from the Utah beer world.

Please Take a 5-Minute Survey
We want to make Utah Beer News a must-read. To do that, we need to know what matters most to you.
Please take a brief survey to share your thoughts on what's important to you as a beer drinker in the Beehive State.
To thank you for your time... We'll randomly select four (4) names from successfully completed surveys submitted on or before Jan. 31, 2020 to win a Utah Beer News Prize Pack.
We're not sure just yet what the prize packs will include (brewery swag, gift card, beer book, etc.), but they'll each be valued at around $50 (unfortunately, they won't include any actual beer).
You can submit the survey anonymously, but please include your email address if you'd like to be eligible to win a prize pack.
Thank you and good luck!

Each month, I gather beer-related news to share with Utah Beer News email subscribers. Much of what's mentioned in this space is obtained from social sites, taproom visits, email newsletters, etc. (and a few are sent directly to me — hint, hint).
There's a lot happening in the world of Utah craft beer, so I hope you find this monthly roundup helpful. Feel free to share it with your beer-loving friends.
It's always best to confirm event dates, times and locations with the individual organizers.
- Toasted Barrel Brewery helped raise $1,300 to pay off school lunch debts at a neighborhood elementary school. Well done, everyone who contributed!
- Utah's seemingly next-in-line brewery—Grid City Beer Works—now has signage! Plus, a little contest.
- Mountain West Hard Cider is continuing its "Movie Mondays" with a screening of Dirty Grandpa on Jan. 27. It's also planning "2 for Tuesdays" (tacos and margaritas) and "Women's Wednesdays." Details can be found on Mountain West's Facebook.
- Fans of The Office will want to pop into Fisher Brewing on Jan. 26 for trivia night. It starts at 8 p.m. and proceeds benefit Volunteers of America, Utah, Homeless Youth Resource Center.
- Cerveza Zólupez Beer Company will take over taps at Craft by Proper on Jan. 29. Even more, the Ogden nano-brewery is now making its beer available throughout the state.
- Level Crossing Brewing is introducing Dallas Alice, a Belgian Blonde, with a release party on Jan. 31 from 4-8 p.m. It will be available in the South Salt Lake brewery's taproom or to-go from its beer store. The 6.2% brew is also expected to hit liquor store shelves.
- UTOG Brewing in Ogden is hosting a brunch on Feb. 2 for the NFL's Big Game between Kansas City and San Francisco. I'm sure other breweries and pubs are doing the same. If you hear of others, drop me a line.
- The latest Shades Brewing email newsletter teased that it will be re-releasing its Great American Beer Festival gold medal-winning Thai Tom Kha Golden Sour Kveik (date TBD). The South Salt Lake brewery also holds Open Mic Nights every other Wednesday, provides live music on Fridays and hosts dart leagues on Tuesdays. Get all the details on Shades' Facebook.
- The Utah Brewers Guild is hosting a variety of educational seminars. The next one is set for Feb. 4 and will discuss beer quality and malt. For a complete schedule, and to get tickets, visit the Utah Brewers Guild on Facebook.
- Also on Feb. 4, and each Tuesday through March, Roosters B Street Brewery is hosting Game Night Live trivia. The fun starts at 6:30 p.m.
- Incidentally, Happy 25 Years in 2020 to Roosters Brewing.
- Here are two "Pints for a Purpose" events we came across for February. On Feb. 5, Hopkins Brewing Co. isd donating a portion of proceeds to support cancer patients and their families. And on Feb. 27, RoHa Brewing Project joins forces with Wildlands Network to facilitate conversations about wildlife and how to protect the wild spaces they need to survive.
- The St. George beer scene is getting some buzz, via KUER, thanks, in part, to Silver Reef Brewing and Zion Brewery's Station II location.
- Beer Zombies, a Las Vegas-based "craft beer lifestyle brand, brewing project, and all-around craft beer ambassador" invaded the Beehive State.
- According to Mikey over on the Utah Beer Blog, Brooklyn Brewery has begun distributing to Utah.
- Stronger beer in Utah grocery stores seems to be hurting sales in border towns, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
- A new bill could make way for "Wine of the Month" clubs in Utah, via FOX-13 News.
- Homebrewers, get brewing for the 12th Annual Section 26 ReALE Home Brew Competition. It takes place on March 7 at Rio Tinto Stadium (beers need to be registered by March 3).
- Thrillist lists the Best Beers in All 50 States. Do you agree with the Utah selections?
- We visited with RoHa Brewing Project this week (look for an article and podcast episode soon). The Salt Lake brewery now has available double-sided campfire mugs (that keep beer cold and coffee hot), as well as cold-weather beanies. Visit the taproom to check out the new merch.
- Are you winding down a "Dry January?" Jeff Alworth, of the Beervana blog, writes about the topic (which is close to our philosophy as well).
- ICYMI: An article we wrote for Utah Stories about some new beers that hit the market once 5% ABV beers were allowed to be served on draft and made available on grocery store shelves throughout the state.
- Any thoughts on Bud Light Seltzer?
And finally...
