Dear Congregation:

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “We must use time creatively in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right.”

This past weekend, 60 members of ERUCC and Congregation Kol Ami, traveled to Franklinton Center in North Carolina for our annual work weekend.  We embodied King’s words of using our time creatively.  We come together to learn about two different faith traditions and how we can be lights of hope and justice in the world.  We travel to Enfield, North Carolina to learn about that area of our country, to hear the stories of those whose roots are deep in the land and soil and history of that community.  We listen so that they know their history is not forgotten and that we will learn from it.

Our annual trip to Franklinton Center involves adults giving creatively of their time to nurture the lives of our youth in faith, empower them to be leaders, and teach them new skills.

This time is ripe with meaning and purpose and understanding.  The time spent together is ripe with possibilities for gaining renewed understanding that we are all beloved children of God.

I invite you to come to the Community Room  this Sunday at 9:30 to hear from those who participated in this year’s trip.

Food for Thought

"[T]he world and the church are changing more rapidly than we can comprehend…some things are the same: the world and the church desperately need [our] energy, imagination, passion, impatience, intelligence, and love…one of the great biblical themes is that God calls…all of us to walk into the future without knowing exactly where we are headed, to let go of old securities and certainties and trust the God who promises to be with us wherever we go."

Sunday Worship
Third Sunday after Epiphany
The prophet Isaiah proclaims in Isaiah 9: 1-4, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.”  The exile is ending, joyful deliverance is coming.  Jesus begins his ministry in Galilee in Matthew 4: 12-23. calling disciples to join him in his work, promising his disciples who were fishermen that he will now teach them to “fish for people.”
We will be receiving new members this morning.  The Senior Choir will be singing.

Let’s Study the Bible and Prepare for Worship / Coffey Room

In this class, we will seek to draw out the major themes found in the Lectionary scripture texts on which the sermon will be based. Exploring the lectionary Scriptural texts before the Sunday morning worship (10:30a.m.) service will help prepare participants to more fully involved and more present in worship.  The class meets in the Coffey Room.  Led by clergy members of the congregation.

How Recycling REALLY Works

Ever wondered how (or if) recycling REALLY works? This crash course will cover: how to recycle effectively, what can (and can't) be recycled in Frederick County (and why), and describe the impact that “wish-cycling” of non-recyclable materials has on the program. We'll take a look at how recycling gets sorted, where it gets sold and what the future of the program might look like. Participants may bring in packaging or material samples they have questions about.

Momentum: Moving Racial Justice Forward
No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.
Join us on Feb. 9th from 12:30-2:30 in the Community Room as we move through a time of reflection and conversation about how we as individuals, and as a congregation, can be intentional agents for a more racially just and peaceful society.
Participants will enjoy time to inventory their interests and talents, brainstorm creative ideas, and form partnerships to move those ideas forward.
Lunch will be provided, so RSVPs are critical. Please let the Church Office know you will be attending by Feb. 5. Questions: Contact Michelle Beadle at pastorbeadle@gmail.com

Did you know that 2 of our 18th century pastors were denied access to the pulpit and locked out of the church by dissident factions? Did you know that there have been only 16 pastors of ERUCC in 275 years and that the most recent 6 pastorates have averaged more than 30 years each? Did you know that our 2 shortest pastorates ended amid charges of “scandalous conduct,” “sexual irregularities” and “drunkenness”? Did you know that more of our pastors were natives of Philadelphia than of the entire state of Maryland?
If you want to hear these stories and more, Pastor Emeritus Fred Wenner will present “Pastors of ERUCC” in the Downtown Community Room on Sunday, February 2 from 9:30 to10:15 a.m. and then again on Monday, February 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend!
