Announcing Trevor Marshall as the Keynote Speaker for the 5th Annual Railway Modellers Meet of BC
Registration is Now Open!

Keynote Speaker: Trevor Marshall

The RMMBC committee is happy to announce that Trevor Marshall will be the keynote speaker at the 5th Annual Railway Modellers Meet.  Trevor is a lifelong model railway enthusiast.  He finds every scale, gauge, prototype, era and theme fascinating – and has built layouts to indulge many of these ideas.  He has never finished a layout although his current project – a Canadian National branchline in southern Ontario in S Scale – is getting close.  That said, he’s already thinking about what will come next.

Beyond his own projects, Trevor has a keen interest in layout design and has helped several friends create layouts that combine protoype modelling and operating fun while remaining achievable in terms of time, money and other resources. Trevor is a frequent contributor to Railroad Model Craftsman magazine, co-hosted a podcast called The Model Railway Show and was a host and writer for TrainMasters TV.  He writes a number of websites about the hobby, too.

We’re very happy that Trevor will be presenting the Keynote Address as well as an additional clinic.

New Hands On Work Shops

This year's edition of the Railway Modellers Meet will feature two hands on work shops for meet attendees.  The work shops are the following:

Work Shop 1: Scenic ground covers: from plywood to pasture in 3 hours

Additional cost: $10 per clinic attendee

This clinic is a chance to try your hand at modelling realistic scenery and explore some of the many products and techniques available today.   Each modeller will take home their own model, created with their own hands.

Since the goal is realistic scenery, we will copy a couple of photographs and all model the same scene.  Modellers will learn how to add soil and gravel, grass and other plant life, and a small stream.  Materials for a base, small land forms and ground cover (including the water in the stream) will be provided.

Because we only have a couple of hours, the techniques and products used are limited to ensure enough drying time to allow portability by the end of the day.

Participants are encouraged (but do not need) to bring:

  • If you have skin sensitivity to acrylics, glues, etc., a pair of gloves.
  • Appropriate clothing or an apron or smock in case of spills.  The products we are using will stain, harden and are permanent.
  • If your find airborne substances irritating, consider a dust mask for use when we apply the “soil” and “grass”.
  • Portable hair dryer (if you have one)
  • Static grass applicator (if you have one)
  • An old stocking or sock and a couple of small containers (ie. yogurt containers or an old mug)
  • Small and medium sized paint brushes

Spaces are limited so register now to avoid missing out on these always popular hands on clinics

Workshop 2: "Build and take away a custom CP Tool House in N or HO scale."

Additional cost: $25 per attendee

Learn how to use new approaches in your structures modelling. You will build a CP tool house in either of N or HO scale in a three hour hands-on workshop. You will work with a custom designed kit and learn techniques of layered coloring of building components to bring out the detail in this laser cut craftsman kit. You will also be provided with some specialized tools and sample supplies that should make your modeling life easier and more fun.

Participants need to bring the following items:

  • Your favorite X-Acto type knife with “fresh” blades (Suggest #11 as best)
  • Portable cutting mat or cutting board (something to cut out parts on)
  • Tweezers
  • Sanding sticks or needle files
  • Magnifying device or Optivisor if you use one
  • Glue: Probond, Elmers white glue, or your favorite glue for gluing wood kits together. (I like the Scotch Craft Adhesives as it dries quickly clear and leaves little residue).
  • Acrylic paints that match your railroad line’s colors for lineside structures.  If you will be painting the building in CP colours, these will be provided.
  • Paint brushes: A finer round detail one, a flat medium sized one for painting walls etc. and a stiff ½” one for dry brushing.
  • Elastics or clamps for glue up.

Spaces are limited so register now to avoid missing out on these always popular hands on clinics.

Bring a Friend

This year we are trying something new.  If you have a friend who has been on the fence about attending the Railway Modellers Meet, now’s the time to get them signed up.  Word of mouth is our best promotion, as a personal recommendation carries much more weight for people considering participating.

This year we are offering a bring a friend discount of $20. If your friend has never attended The Railway Modellers Meet of BC then list him-her on this form.  If they are an NMRA member add their NMRA number for an additional $15 discount. When their status is verified as a new attendee the meet registrar will issue you a Paypal refund for the total applicable discount.

We want to engage as much of the model railway community locally, regionally and further afield, so we are hoping that attendees will help bring new people to both the hobby and to the Railway Modellers Meet.

Clinics

In addition to the keynote presentation noted above, Trevor Marshall will also be presenting an additional clinic as part of the excellent clinic stream planned for RMMBC.  The 2020 clinic edition will include such wide ranging topics as building scenery, electronics, builidings, rolling stock and more.  We will also have returning favourites like hands on clinics, a Skype clinic and many others.

Check back on the RMMBC website for frequent updates about the exciting clinic lineup.   There will be something for everyone in the clinics.

Operating Sessions

Operating Sessions have always been a perennial favourite at every Railway Modellers Meet.  This year there will be a wide range of available layouts for operations.  The layout roster has expanded with several new additions.  There will be sessions on both Friday afternoon and Saturday evening.  Don’t wait though, register today for both the meet and operating sessions to avoid missing out.  The ops sessions fill up very quickly.  You can find the RMMBC registration page here

Layout Tours

The 2020 layout tours will be focused on the North Vancouver area.  We’ve lined up some excellent model railways for your viewing pleasure.  Check the website for more information on the layouts taking part in this year’s tour.  You will need to sign up (at no additional charge) for the layout tour as part of your registration.  Several of these layouts have not been on tour in quite a few years or ever, so there will be lots to see.

Display Room and Meet the Modeller

The heart of every Railway Modellers Meet is the display room.  Bring your models, modules, electronics, plans or anything related to your model railway hobby interests.

As in previous years, everything is welcome in the display room: locomotives, freight and passenger cars, work equipment, vehicles, electronics, buildings and scenery.  Have plans, cool tools or a jig you use to make something?  Bring them to the display room.  Anything that helps you in your modelling endeavours is welcome.

If your display requires a significant amount of space (ie. Module or large building) please contact the Display Coordinator <here> to arrange the space you require.   Last year we had an excellent turnout for the display room, and we hope to have even more this year.

We will also have a return of “Meet the Modeller” as this was very well received in previous years.  We have listened to attendee feedback on Meet the Modeller and will be making some changes to make it an even better experience.  More details will be announced in future newsletters.

Venue and Accommodations

As in previous years, the Railway Modellers Meet will be held at the Simon Fraser University’s Burnaby Campus.  We had great feedback about the clinic rooms last year, and we have them booked again this year.  These rooms will have improved sound and microphones to enhance the clinic experience for attendees.

SFU offers clean, comfortable inexpensive accommodations for meet attendees.  Several options are available, all of which are very much in demand.  The accommodations page can be found here.  Book your room and register for the meet soon as rooms are limited!

Much More to Come

Future newsletters will have much more information and many more announcements about the Railway Modellers Meet of BC.  Check our website, Facebook page , Instagram and Twitter accounts for regular updates on the meet.  We’ll see you at the 5th Annual Railway Modellers Meet of BC May 22nd to 24th, 2020!  Bring a friend!
