Hello Listeners!

It's January in Cleveland and Connecticut, which makes it the perfect time to hit the beach. We loved talking with Kelly Claes -- she was so much fun to talk to, so we hope she has a long playing career ahead of her!

Hey, one quick favor: If you like this newsletter, please pass it on to a few friends. It being an Olympic year, we want to make sure we find all of our people before Tokyo 2020.

Thank you!

A Peek Behind the Olympic Fever Curtain

So many things did not make the final edit of our interview this week, including the fact that Kelly and Alison would make great grocery shopping buddies because Kelly (height: 6'2") could get things off the top shelf, and Alison (height: 5'4") could get things off the bottom shelf.

But one very, very important thing happened that just did not fit in with the rest of the interview, yet it's important to the show:

Alison finally figured out her B-girl name!!!

I'm never quite sure if you love it when we talk about breakin', if you roll your eyes in digust, or if you're perplexed as to why this is pretty much assured to be on the Olympic program come 2024. But we get a kick out of it, so thanks for sticking with us.

Anyway, Kelly was trying to convince me and Alison that we could totally be a beach volleyball team, regardless of height. She might be 6'2", but her partner Sarah Sponcil is just 5'10" and is her "short defender."

I said, "You're my short defender, Alison!"

Alison responded, "That...that could be my B-girl name! Short Defender!"

"I'm so glad I could help you figure this out," Kelly said.

So there you have it. If you see Short Defender pop up on the competitive breakin' circuit, you'll know who it is.

And if you can help me remember my B-girl name, email me. I'd love to know what we decided on.

Favorite Olympic Moments

We've got another duo in this week's favorite Olympic moment. Listener Nicolas loved ice dancing's most epic performance: Torvill and Dean at Sarajevo 1984 (if you are a bronze level+ Patreon patron, you will know the brain fart I had when trying to remember Torvill and Dean's names during a book club taping. It was a shameful moment.)
Have a favorite Olympic moment that you want to share? Email us a link to the video, and we'll include it in a future newsletter!

What We're Reading/Listening/Watching

  • The Suspect, of course! Book Club is next week, so don't miss out!
  • Along with that favorite moment, this is an interesting story of how Torvill and Dean's Bolero program came about.
  • More on the Tokyo 2020 ticket design (OK, these details make me like them a lot more than I originally thought. Why did I not give the Japanese enough credit for thoughtful design??).
  • Jill's on an episode of Podcast Gumbo this week! Podcast Gumbo is a great resource if you're looking for new podcasts!

Tell a Friend!
