St. Sophia Weekly Update

Weekly Services

Don't forget, there will not be any services this weekend at St. Sophia as Fr. Thomas and the GOYAns travel to Dallas to participate in the annual GOYA Basketball Tournament. The church, however, will be open on Sunday, from 9AM to 11AM, for prayer and to light candles. Please keep Father and our youth in your prayers for safe travels and a successful retreat.

At that time, as Jesus entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said: "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When he saw them he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus's feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And he said to him: "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."

Luke 17:12-19

House Blessings

In the Orthodox Church, the period between Theophany and the beginning of the Lenten Triodion is traditionally set aside for blessing the houses of the faithful. The priest will walk through all rooms of the house, with the family members following, blessing each room. If you are interested in receiving a house blessing, please fill out this form. We ask that you try to arrange a time when all family members are home. Create a list of family members (those living and dead) to give to the priest when he arrives.

YOUTH NEWS

Oratorical Festival

The St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival is just around the corner. There are two divisions - Juniors (Grades 7-9) and Seniors (Grades 10-12). Topics, along with tips and resources, for each division can be found here. All students are highly encouraged to enter. For more information, please contact David Karle.

JOY/HOPE

Attention JOY/HOPE parents, tomorrow's meeting has been canceled. Unfortunately the sick bug has bitten one too many kids. Please look out for the next meeting in February. And remember, regular hand washing is very important this time of year...for kids and adults.

Prayer for Healing
O Lord our God, Who by word alone did heal all diseases, Who did cure the kinswoman of Peter, You Who chastise with pity and heal according to Your goodness; Who are able to put aside every malady and infirmity, do You Yourself, the same Lord, grant aid to this Your servants and cure them of every sickness of which they are grieved; lift them up from their bed of pain, and send down upon them Your great mercy, and if it be Your Will, give to them health and a complete recovery; for You are the Physician of our souls and bodies, and to You do we send up Glory: to Father, and to Son, and to Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Message from Archbishop Elpidophoros

When Jesus was tempted by satan in the wilderness, He was weakened in body by His fasting, but strengthened in spirit by the very same fasting. What is it that we must fast from to strengthen our souls?

Wisdom of the Fathers

Having met the Savior, therefore, the lepers earnestly besought Him to free them from their misery, and called Him Master, that is. Teacher. No one pitied them when suffering this malady, but He Who had appeared on earth for this very reason, and had become man that He might show pity to all, He was moved with compassion for them, and had mercy on them.
St. Cyril of Alexandria
Commentary on the Gospel of St. Luke

And why did He not rather say, I will, be you cleansed; as He did in the case of another leper, but commanded them rather to show themselves to the priests? It was because the law gave directions to this effect to those who were delivered from leprosy (Lev. 14-2); for it commanded them to show themselves to the priests, and to offer a sacrifice for their cleansing.
St. Cyril of Alexandria
Commentary on the Gospel of St. Luke
