Offset Your Jet Setting

Air plane flying above the clouds
Millions of passengers pass through Toronto's Pearson Airport (YYZ) during the holiday season. Some fly domestically, others escape to warmer climes. Wherever they go, CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions follow.

As demand for air travel increases, so does awareness of its contribution to climate change. Some jet setters have started purchasing carbon offsets to reduce their air travel impact. Calculate your trip here.

Purchasing carbon offsets supports global carbon-reducing projects. There are some good local options too. Centre Wellington’s Tree Trust invests in planting and caring for trees in the neighbourhood. But you can invest even closer to home by planting trees on your own property.

A young one-acre forest can absorb up to 5000 lbs (2267 kg) of carbon a year. That's approximately five round-trip flights to Cancun, one of YYZ’s top destinations. A family forest offers other benefits too, like enhancing water quality, providing habitat and increasing property value. Financial and technical support for landowners wanting to plant on their property is available through CVC.

If you don't have the space for a small forest, pair your carbon offsets with other stewardship activities. Learn about opportunities on your property at our next Caring for Your Land and Water workshop on March 10. Save the date and the planet.
