Film review
Mother

South Korean director Bong Joon-ho has been making quite a splash lately with his latest film, Parasite (nominated for multiple Oscars this year). For those who are interested to see more of his work, we recommend an earlier film of his, Mother.

Set in a small town in South Korea, Mother tells the story of one woman’s undying love for her son.

Kim Hye-ja plays the widowed mother who tries to protect her intellectually disabled son when he is accused of murdering a young girl from the town.

When police force him to sign a confession and throw the young man behind bars, his aging mother turns detective to find the real killer.

Beautifully realized by Bong Joon-ho (who also directed The Host), Mother is a superb film with multiple layers to its storyline. With an award-winning performance by Kim Hye-ja, it is a powerful film that will haunt your memory for years to come.
Tips & Techniques
Tracking force, pt. 2

In the previous newsletter, we mentioned the importance of using proper tracking force for your LP playback. Too little or too much can ruin both your cartridge, as well as your LP collection.

The following instructions apply to most tonearm models, but please be aware that some tonearms operate differently.

When you look at the tonearm, you’ll notice the counterweight at the rear. This weight spins and moves slowly up and down the length of the tonearm. This movement is what changes the tracking force of your cartridge. Just in front of this counterweight is a small dial with numbers on it, relating to the grams of downward force.

To properly set the tracking force, it’s important to “zero-out” the tonearm. To do this, first remove any stylus guard from your cartridge, as this adds considerable weight. Then adjust the counterweight until the tonearm is floating freely, with the main tube parallel to the turntable’s platter. This represents 0 grams of force.

Next, while holding the counterweight steady with one hand, use your other hand to spin the numerical dial separate from the weight until it reads 0.

Now, simply crank the counterweight and numerical dial together to achieve the desired tracking force – usually 1.5 to 2.0 grams.

Remember, that if you ever change out your cartridge, this whole process must be repeated, as most cartridges vary considerably in weight.

Thorens TD 240-2

Newfound love for the LP format doesn’t seem to be fading at all, it seems that it’s much more than a trend.

One great aspect of this new interest in analog playback is the plethora of new turntables that manufactures are releasing.

Harmony never stopped selling turntables, even at the height of the CD craze! Denon and Pro-Ject have been our two main brands for years, but we’re happy to announce that Harmony is now carrying Thorens!

For those not in the know, Thorens is a Swiss manufacturer that has been known for their turntables since 1928! Just arrived at Harmony is the new Thorens TD 240-2 turntable.

Sporting a full sized 12-inch aluminum platter, the TD 240-2 is a hefty 14 lbs., with the aluminum platter weighing in at 1.5 lbs.

The TD 240-2 uses a flat-drive belt and electronically controlled DC motor for its operation. Also included is a factory-installed Audio-Technica AT95E moving magnet cartridge, which is attached to a one-piece Thorens TP 19-1 aluminum tonearm.

All that said, there are two things that stand out in a turntable of this pedigree. First, the TD 240-2 plays three speeds, 33 1/3, 45 and yes, 78 rpm!

Secondly, it is a fully automatic turntable! Yup, an audiophile grade turntable with a start & stop button! Auto shut-off makes it perfect for late night sessions when you fall asleep on the sofa!

Keeping it old school, the style of the TD 240-2 is pure retro, with a solid real wood plinth with walnut veneer.

Currently in stock, the Thorens TD 240-2 sells for just $1099!

Boulder 1012

When absolute sonic perfection is the goal, the only name we can think of is Boulder. Over the years, many a customer’s jaw has dropped once they see the price tag, but Boulder is a company that spares no expense when it comes to analog and digital components.

The 1012 digital pre-amp is from the 1000 series of products available from the Boulder, CO based company. It features four analog and four digital inputs, all with XLR connectors (high-quality XLR to RCA connectors are available).

As you might expect from such a stellar performing pre-amp, the analog and digital circuits each have their own fully regulated power supplies. In fact, the 1012 pre-amp goes one step further and shuts down all digital circuitry whenever an analog input is selected.

On the digital side, Boulder has developed what they call “up and over-sampling”. In a nutshell, the 1012 uses 64-bit calculations and a very high sampling rate to insure that you derive every last bit of detail from your digital sources.

The smooth mirrored-finished steel volume control may appear to be digitally based, as the display shows the gain level in 0.5dB increments, however, the gain is controlled by a series of discrete resistors. This insures that the quality of sound is not compromised regardless of level.

And speaking of sound quality, it doesn’t get much better than a Boulder. Completely neutral, the pre-amp doesn’t add anything to the signal, allowing for ultimate transparency. And the digital side is every bit as good as the analog, so you never have to compromise.

Originally selling for $20k, Harmony will be selling our display model at a savings of over 50% - that’s right, only $8900 for a state-of-the-art Boulder pre-amp! Don’t wait, as there’s only one available at this price!
