"The Cornerstone ... Living Stones ... and us!"

As we gather online for worship on January 26, Joe Detrick, will invite us to consider how the most unlikely of persons, those on the margins of the church, those rejected by mortals, might receive untold blessings in the eyes of God - precious and holy. Please refer to the two scripture readings: Scripture: Psalm 118.22–24 (Peterson) and 1 Peter 2.4–5 (NRSV).
Following a short analysis of the building of Solomon’s Temple (1 st Kings 5:15-18; and 6:7), Joe will share an exasperating life-learning farm experience (picking rocks). The Temple capstone and the farm rocks, thought insignificant, became powerful metaphors for God’s transformational power – living stones, chosen and precious in God’s sight.
In your respective congregations, alongside Living Stream, what is your experience in being welcomed, valued, cherished, and recognized with spiritual gifts within? Though perhaps rejected by mortals, yet chosen and precious in God’s sight! As a denomination we have not been very successful or faithful in welcoming our LGBTQ neighbors into our circles of care. How might persons of faith, seeking the mind of Christ, address these weighty stone-like issues of the day?
Please join our worship and share your hopes, dreams, and actions that give Christians hope in a challenging world because of the “hope that is within each one of us.” (1 Peter 3:15)

Worship online with Living Stream Church of the Brethren on Sunday at 8:00 pm Eastern time; 7:00 pm Central; 6:00 pm Mountain; 5:00 Pacific time. Or you may access the recorded archives of our worship at www.livingstreamcob.org any time that suits your schedule.

Welcome New Pastor
The Living Stream Board has called Liz Bidgood Enders to become part of the pastoral team of Living Stream Church of the Brethren. Many of you heard Liz preach in our worship on January 12.
Liz was born in Pennsylvania and is part of three generations of ordained women in her family.  She and her husband Greg are graduates of Elizabethtown College and Bethany Theological Seminary, and both served a year in BVS as workcamp coordinators.  Liz has served congregations in Ohio and Indiana, and for the last 13 years has been Pastor at Ridgeway Community CoB in Harrisburg, PA.  Beyond congregational ministry, she is passionate about biblical storytelling.  Other interests include learning sign language, playing games of all kinds, physical activity, reading, and watching movies.  Liz and Greg have three kids (Micah, Kara, and Jonah).  They also have a dog, a cat, and a rat (who technically belongs to Kara).  World peace is what she envisions and works toward, but a more modest goal is for the animals in the house to get along with each other.
WRITE A LETTER, CHANGE A LIFE
NOW through JANUARY 31, 2020

Write For Rights is Amnesty International’s largest annual human rights campaign. People like you around the world write letters on behalf of people who need urgent help. This year Amnesty International has identified ten people who are being unjustly imprisoned or facing abuses. This year’s 10 cases are young people under threat; you can help them by signing up, writing, reporting, and mailing your letters by January 31, 2020. See detailed instructions at amnestyusa.org  .
Letter from the Birmingham City Jail
While Dr Martin Luther King Jr. receives much adulation and praise, some of his writings are not quite so easy to read. In worship on January 19, Pastor Debbie challenged us all to read the complete Letter from the Birmingham City Jail.
Brethren Pastor Executed
Nigerian Pastor Rev. Lawan Andimi of Nigeria was executed on January 20 by the Boko Haram. He had been abducted on January 2. He was an ordained minister in Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria), served as EYN district secretary for the Michika area, and was chair of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the Michika area.
Andimi is just one of the captives of Boko Haram and factions of the Islamic State who have been executed since December 2019. According to reporting from Ahmad Salkida in “Christianity Today,” a Nigerian soldier was killed along with Andimi. On Christmas Eve 2019, 11 Christian captives in Borno State were beheaded. Also in December, four abducted aid workers of the international NGO Action Against Hunger were killed.
