Spread over two days from November 25 to 26, the Urban Thinkers Campus invited participants to have a critical exchange of ideas on the theme “Safe Public Spaces”. The Urban Thinkers Campus (UTC) is a model initiative of UN-Habitat’s World Urban Campaign, conceived as an open space for critical exchange between all stakeholders and partners, aims to promote sustainable urbanization. 100 stakeholders from Civil Society, Government Agencies and the Corporate sector were invited.

We analysed various case studies and facilitated innovation labs wherein the participants came up with innovative ideas for developing solutions to safer public spaces. From students to credible personalities, the two days were filled with participatory multi-sectoral perspectives exploring the current conditions of our public spaces and elaborating on how we can further develop them and make them safer.

Youth Innovation Challenge

|
Parallel to the UTC, we hosted the Youth Innovation Challenge on Safe Public Spaces which is a three-month social incubator for the youth. On November 29, 2019, the 10 finalist teams made a final pitch of their local community-based solutions for Safe Public Spaces. Over the three months, the teams from different cities in India went through a detailed workshop on business modelling at the Magic Bus Learning Centre in Karjat, attended seven master class webinars and were mentored by experts in the sector. We are grateful to the 17 mentors and the 15 jury members who helped us shortlist the teams and finalise the winners

In our opinion, all the teams were winners as they worked hard to implement their ideas into working and well thought out prototypes. The top three winners and their innovations are:
● Team NCR mates - Data-driven Algorithm for College Campus Safety
● Team Nox - Nightly Community Activity to Encourage Women in Public Spaces
● Team One - Urban Infrastructure for Toilets for Transgenders

In keeping with our mission, we constantly endeavour to create Safe Public Spaces. To this end, in the month of September, Red Dot Foundation commenced a six month ‘Safe Campus Program’ with 20 colleges in Maharashtra as part of the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives, Government of Canada. Our 100 Youth Leaders underwent an extensive Train the Trainer program in November. They are now in their second phase of the campaign where they have begun conducting workshops at their respective educational institutions, sensitizing fellow students on topics of gender equality, sexual violence prevention, safety in public spaces, laws against sexual violence, and so on.

They are working industriously to make their campuses safe and inclusive. So far, peer workshops have been conducted in the following educational institutes:
● Poona College, Pune
● Karve Institute of Social Sciences, Pune
● Hill Green High School, Pune
● Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune
● M. H. Saboo Siddik Polytechnic College, Mumbai
● SNDT University, Mumbai
● L. S. Raheja College of Architecture, Mumbai
● Shahu College, Pune
In addition, our Head of Training and Special Projects, Marissa Borges, conducted the first CFLI 2019 administration session on the POCSO and POSH legislation with the faculty members at M.H. Saboo Siddik Polytechnic, Mumbai.

Help Red Dot Foundation Global by donating to one of our campaigns. We plan to train 10 Youth Campus Ambassadors to work on projects to further safety of women and girls to prevent sexual violence. Red Dot Foundation Global is a 501c3 organization.
