ECO HUB for Exmouth - latest update
Transition Exmouth has put in a bid to the Climate Action Lottery Fund , the first funding application towards our Eco Hub, exciting times!
Our vision is of a vibrant, thriving Eco-hub for Exmouth and the surrounding area. Our Eco-hub would be a converted existing building in the centre of the town, fully accessible to our whole community, with staff and a team of volunteers equipped to inform, signpost and re-skill Exmouth’s population.
The Eco-hub will pull together all the amazing groups that already work in this town and help them maximise what they already do, as well as bringing in new highly-skilled staff to push projects on to the next level.
The Eco-hub will be a home for physical activities, such as skill-share groups, zero-carbon-living workshops, grow-your-own demos, healthy living advice, bike repairs, arts-based workshops and a Library of Things.
Alongside this, we see the Eco-hub as the centre from which our outreach team of project co-ordinators will work. These could include
Buildings Coordinator, Travel Coordinator, Education Coordinator, Marine and Green Tourism, a Hub Manager and Demonstration Town Co-ordinator.

TREE NEWS
Tree Celebration weekend with Wild Exmouth and Exmouth Tree group was a great success, with new trees planted in St John's Playing Fields and a host of people involved in the tree trail and activities at Phear Park

Exmouth Community Association and Exmouth Civic Society are working on a cultural and built register, and TrEx (along with Exmouth Tree Project) is looking into the logistics of co-ordinating the tree survey update side of things.

TrEx's Event officer Catherine Causley will be coordinating the Big Fix 2020 on the 15th Feb as part of her day job as reuse officer at Devon County Council. This is a massive event and a world first, so please help out if you can. The Big Fix volunteers are aiming to fix over 2000 items and save over 60 tonnes of carbon .

Energy Advice Clinic & Talks
One of the first events to be run by the Transition Exmouth / Town Council partnership is to be an energy day at the end of February. The event will be in two parts, an energy advice clinic to help people in fuel poverty, and talks on sustainable living.
The energy advice clinic will be run with Gill Wyatt from Exeter Community Energy's Healthy Homes for Wellbeing project. "We know about switching and finding competitive tariffs, that includes green tariffs and energy saving strategies," says Gill. " I know what grants are available to install insulation and who is eligible".
People will be able to bring copies of their bills to see if they are on the best tariff.

There will be short talks at the Energy event , too. Gill who is running the clinic will do a short talk on things we can all do to reduce our domestic energy demands, and Heart & Soul, the refill stall in the market, will talk about zero packaging. Catherine Causeley will talk about the 10 ways her a family lives a bit more sustainably, and we are still booking speakers - watch our Facebook page and website for updates.
The event will attract people from right across the Exmouth community. It will help people who are struggling make choices between whether to buy food or heat their home, and raise awareness about energy and sustainability issues.
If you would like to help out at the Energy Clinic , we are looking for volunteers to help book people in, set up and pack down, as well as chatting to people about energy, and encouraging them to sign up to TrEx .

Winter Warmth Campaign
11.6% of households in Devon are living in Fuel Poverty. Often they are living in hard to heat homes and also have health issues such as respiratory and cardiovascular problems and depression. Shockingly, in Devon, more than 500 people may die from cold weather deaths this winter. These are unnecessary deaths – yet staying warm is a struggle for many households. The downward spiral created by fuel poverty, hard to heat homes and health conditions are intensified by winter. That’s the sad reality. And we’d like to be able to use our Hardship Fund to help keep people warm this winter – thats where you can help.

Please consider donating your Winter Fuel Payment to our Hardship Fund, if you don’t need it yourself. It could make a real difference.
If you don’t receive the Winter Fuel Payment, don’t feel that you are excluded from our Winter Warmth campaign. Any donation to the ECOE Healthy Homes Hardship Fund is very welcome and it will mean we can do more to keep others warm this winter.

Exe Estuary Winter Forum 2020 event
Tuesday 4th February: 6.30pm to 9pm. Exe Estuary Winter Forum 2020 event at the Council Chamber, County Hall, Topsham Road, Exeter EX2 4QD.

The Forum is an open, public event for anyone who has an interest in the Exe Estuary. Details can be found HERE. A number of representatives will be attending to take part in discussions on a variety of very topical subjects including:
- Representatives from the Environment Agency will be giving updates on the Exe Flood Defence Schemes, and responding to issues relating to the Dawlish Warren Beach Management Scheme.
- A presentation will be given about the Devon Climate Emergency, linking to what this means for the Exe Estuary.
- A focus on Pacific oysters on the Exe: an Invasive Non-Native Species.
- An update on the work of the Exe Estuary Management Partnership and current priorities of the Harbour Authority.
- The Harbour Master, Grahame Forshaw, will be attending the meeting to answer any questions from the audience.

The Joanna Toole Foundation's application to the Charity Commission was submitted in the New Year. Joanna’s family and friends have given pledges of nearly £200k with which to launch the charity. The founding trustees are Joanna's father and former Transition Exmouth Chairman Adrian Toole, Alyx Elliot, and Georgina Groves. Claire Bass and Mark Simmonds OBE are joining them on the board.
Joanna Toole died on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302, which crashed on its way from Addis Ababa to Nairobi on March 10th, 2019. Joanna was a campaigner and policy-maker, latterly working for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization FAO on ocean debris issues, specifically on guidelines for the marking of fishing gear. Those who had the privilege of knowing Jo knew her not only as extraordinarily devoted to her work, but also as a supremely warm and wonderful human being. Her dedication to her work on animal welfare with World Animal Protection and OceanCare and her work on critical ocean issues with FAO was topped only by her love for her friends, family and colleagues.
Joanna invariably turned colleagues into friends so that who knew her are deeply shocked and saddened by this terrible tragedy and the world has lost one of its great ocean and animal welfare champions.
In a condolence letter to Adrian, Antόnio Guterres, the Secretary General of the UN said:
“As a champion of animal welfare and the conservation of wildlife, she faithfully reflected the values and principles of the United Nations making an important contribution for the responsible stewardship of our planet through her work.”
Aided by the founding of this charity in her name, others will continue the important work that Jo started.

Active Travel Day April 18th
As part of Exmouth Town Council's commitment to working with TrEx on climate action events, an Active Transport day in the Strand is being planned. It will involve e-bike trials, Public transport, cycling, Dr Bike, Sustrans, Stagecoach, GWR and more. . Four cycle shops are already on board, and invitations are still going out to other stallholders and partners.

CLIMATE ACTION WEBSITE
Exmouth Town Council have agreed to work with Transition Exmouth on a website to promote individual action people can take against climate change , and then link to it in the footer to every ETC email.
This will have HUGE impact : imagine the reach with a mention of sustainable living in every official publication.
ETC are looking to us to suggest content .
All of which is amazing, a big step forward, and a big responsibility.
The first step will be to find out exactly what is already out there . It may well make more sense to link with existing information , and use the Exmouth - specific part of the new website for links to local help, advice, and suppliers.
We need you everyone to help for this project !
