Call and/or Write Your Legislators Now!

The next 10 days are critical for the future of the Kentucky Writing Project. The Governor's Budget Address is scheduled for Jan. 28 and Legislative Committees are currently meeting to determine their budget priorities. It is essential that the Governor, the House Education Committee, and the Senate Education Committee be made aware of your support for the Kentucky Writing Project--especially before a KWP meeting with House Education leadership on Jan. 29.

I know that you are busy, but if we do not receive funding in this budget then the Kentucky Writing Project will cease to exist. Please make time within the next week to do at least one of the following:

1. Call 1-800-372-7181 to tell your legislators about the importance of the Kentucky Writing Project to you. In my communications with legislators I explain why I care personally. I also stress how critical comprehensive literacy professional development is for Kentucky's teachers and students. We are the only professional development provider that focuses on comprehensive literacy K-16 and across content areas. It is easy to send your message to your legislator as well as education leadership! You can also call the Governor's Office at (502) 564-2611.

2. Send a written personal appeal to your legislators! Letters and postcards are also tremendously effective. In addition to the personal stories I mentioned above, in my recent letters I included: I hope that you will support the funding of the Kentucky Writing Project in Kentucky’s 2020 budget. The Kentucky Writing Project is requesting direct funding of $456,798 per year which would allow KWP to fund sites at each of Kentucky’s state universities. When these sites are funded (as they were from 1986 to 2017) they will once again annually serve more than 8,000 Kentucky teachers (across grade level and content areas) with comprehensive literacy professional development.

3. Target leaders (by phone and/or letter). I have included the Chair and Vice Chair for both the House Education and Senate Education Committees in my mailings as well as the Governor and Lt. Governor. The Education Committee leaders include Reps. Regina Huff and Steve Riley and Sens. Max Wise and Stephen West. Note: Sen. West represents Morehead!

I am happy to share the letters that I sent off earlier today or any other help you need to promote our cause.

Thank you for helping us share our urgent message!
