Word from the Primary Head
Class photos started to be taken in France in the 1860s at the same time as photography started to become democratic. They were at their most popular from the 1960s to the 1980s once colour photography kicked in. Now they are an institution in schools all over the world. Posing styles have evolved - once upon a time, the children were photographed looking serious and severe, smiles started to appear around 1945 and now they are more and more expressive. From 1968, children started to show their personality through their clothes, abandoning the traditional apron - in one year the change in clothing styles is remarkable. The arrival of digital photography in the 1990s means class photos can be easily shared with friends and family, but it has put the brakes on the tradition of framed school photos taking pride of place on the mantelpiece.
We are delighted to be participating in the tradition and creating memories with our school photos sessions this week and last.
