We are off to a flying start in 2020 with Australia Day by the Bay just around the corner, with some exciting changes, it's sure to be the best one yet!

This year we will be welcoming nearly 100 new citizens in our community at our annual citizenship ceremony in the Sandgate Town Hall from 11.30AM. We have partnered with CWA Sandgate this year to host our ceremony. Please come along and join us in welcoming these newest Australians. Click here to find out more

Our free community celebrations at the Volunteer Marine Rescue in Shorncliffe will be bigger and better than ever with more free entertainment, activities and food. This year we will be asking for gold coin donations to the Bush Fire appeal. Click here to check out the event details.

You may have seen the good news recently that after many years of lobbying alongside the community, we secured funding to develop a management plan for the Einbunpin Lagoon. This work is now wrapping up and the plan will be released for public consultation soon. Some of the actions will include introducing more natural filtration, cleaning out silt, and more shade.

Out and About in the Community

Christmas Events Around the Deagon Ward

Christmas 2019 saw the return of a number of our great local celebrations as well as some new events!

- Koobara Community Christmas
- Carols by the Bay
- Christmas in Sandgate
- South Pacific Islander Christmas in the Park
- Seniors Christmas Concert
- Zillmere Community Centre Christmas Party
- Christmas Movie in the Park
- and many more!

All of these events are a great celebration of our community and really bring locals together for the holiday season! I'd like to send out a huge thank you to all of the people and volunteers make these occasions possible.

Primary School Graduations

December also saw primary school graduations and celebrations for all of the fantastic local schools here in the Deagon Ward. I'd like to once again congratulate all of the school kids for finishing up the school year, especially those who will be moving up to high school in 2020!

Official Opening of the new Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre

The new and improved Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre was also officially opened late last year.

It was wonderful to see local resident Brian Hutchison cut the official ribbon for the new Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre today alongside his wife Ros, Margaret Jeays and Margaret Klucis and Uncle Des Sandy.

Brian, Laurie Jeays and Ken McEwan led a community campaign in the 1980s to stop the destruction of the wetlands for development. The Soorley Council later bought the first 500ha for the people of Brisbane.

Now we have it for generations to come!

What's Coming Up...

Australia Day by the Bay

Join your Northside Representatives, Councillor Jared Cassidy, Stirling Hinchliffe MP and Anika Wells MP for the annual Australia Day by the Bay celebrations!

Come down to the VMR Brisbane at Allpass Pde, Shorncliffe from 3pm to enjoy:

- Aussie BBQ in the park (all proceeds going to bushfire appeal)
- Jumping castle
- Face painting
- Sandcastle competition
- Live entertainment from Ten12, Friday Marmalade, Camden and Riley, Timmy Thicc and Byron Hemma.

The night will wrap up with a free screening of the great Aussie film 'Red Dog'!

Australian Citizenship Ceremony - Australia Day by the Bay

Join the community in welcoming the brand-new citizens at the historic Sandgate Town Hall. This year we have again partnered with CWA Sandgate who will provide the free morning tea!

Each new citizen will be given a native plant to take home.

Local entertainers, the Bayside Divas and Blake Hadley will perform throughout the morning.
