Palmstead's Workshop: 'Thinking Outside the Pot'

There was a great turnout at Palmstead's Soft Landscape Workshop last week with over 350 delegates.  There were some inspiring (and scary) presentations on the current climate emergency and the 6th mass extinction - and what we can do to create more resilient and bio-diverse landscapes in the future.  The workshop looked at how the landscape sector can reduce waste, mitigate the challenges of climate change, halt biodiversity losses and help prepare for a carbon neutral future.

Jaquelin Clay Managing Director of JFA Environmental Planning spoke on Biodiversity Impact Assessment Calculation (BIAC) using recent project case studies to demystify the process and illustrate best practice.

Wealden District Draft Local Plan 'Slammed'

Jaquelin Clay JFA Environmental Planning Managing Director, commented in the Ends Report (16.01.2020) on the 'slammed' Wealden District draft Local Plan which failed to adequately engage with Natural England and over-estimated future vehicle pollution emissions.  It was also criticised for lack of meaningful discussion with its neighbours to deal with unmet housing need.

Recent Negotiations

We have successfully negotiated with the AONB Unit on a new development scheme proposal on a scarp slope adjoining the North Kent Downs AONB.  Contact us if we can provide guidance or advise you on a development with similar constraints.

Changes to Wildlife Legislation and Licensing

Following the formal triggering of Brexit on the 31st January, the only substantive change to wildlife legislation is the requirement to refer to 'The Conservation of Habitats and Species (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019'.  Nothing of substance changes.  The amendments will simply ensure that existing Wildlife Regulations are transposed into domestic law after we leave the EU.  More information is available here.

In other news, Natural England will be introducing charges for Great Crested Newt and Badger licenses for development sites from February 2020, after successfully trialling District Licensing in Woking, the south midlands and latterly Kent and Chesire.

Charges will apply to all new licences and modifications (unless exempt) and will enable better investment in the Wildlife Licensing service - and hopefully an improved service!
