Sibs update January 2020

Adult Sibling Day – booking now open!
Booking is now open for our fantastic annual event for adult siblings on Saturday 14th March 2020, in Manchester. Relax and chat with other adult siblings; get practical information and emotional support on sibling issues.

Adult siblings at our last event said:

“It has been a hugely helpful day. I’m so glad I came!”

“Everything was either very useful from a practical level (legal) or from an emotional level (sharing experiences)”

“I found the sense of community very encouraging and supportive.”

Places are limited and pre-booking is essential.
This event is for any adult sibling who lives in the UK and who has grown up with a disabled brother or sister, whether this is a physical or a learning disability.

Young Siblings and Mental Health
Our spotlight mini-blog this month focuses on young siblings and mental health.  Do share this with any young siblings you care for and let them know you understand some of the pressures they face.

Volunteer Opportunity
Sibs is looking for a new volunteer photographer to help us develop case studies on our website.  If you have professional photography skills and some time to spare, we would love to hear from you at info@sibs.org.uk

Stop Press
Can you help? We have been approached by a journalist who wants to run a story about a sibling young carer who provides care for their brother or sister due to lack of statutory support. Please get in touch with us at info@sibs.org.uk to discuss.

New groups for adult siblings of people with learning disabilities and/or autism
Thanks to the energy and commitment of siblings who volunteer their time, new adult sibling support groups have opened in Brentwood, Maidstone, Preston, Glasgow and Edinburgh. These join the existing groups in Birmingham, Peterborough, Bristol, Crawley and Reading. If you’re over 18, and you have a brother or sister who has a learning disability and/or autism, read more about the groups and register here for times and venue information.

Media watch
At Sibs we are always interested in keeping an eye out for siblings who are in the media.  You may have seen “Princes to Kings” on TV at the end of last year, a sibling band who are keen to raise awareness about epilepsy, the condition which affects their brother.  You can see more of what they are up to on their Facebook page.

Adult sibling survey – your last chance to take part
Do you have a brother or sister with a learning/developmental disability or autism? Are you over 18?

If you haven’t already – please make sure you take part in this important survey about adult sibling relationships, experiences and wellbeing conducted by the University of Warwick.

The results of this survey will help us to understand the needs of adult siblings and shape our work. It may also help us to apply for future funding. This is the first survey of its kind and is an important step in sibling research. You have until the end of January, then the survey will close.

Are you getting fit in 2020?
Is getting fit one of your New Year's resolutions? Whether it’s a marathon, a climb, or a bike ride – if you’re interested in doing a sponsored event for us this year, email info@sibs.org.uk. We really appreciate your support!
