Vaping Updates

Retail Sales of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems and, E-Liquids. On December 20, 2019, the President signed legislation to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and raise the federal minimum age of sale of tobacco products from 18 to 21 years. It is now illegal for a retailer to sell any tobacco product – including cigarettes, cigars and e-cigarettes – to anyone under 21. FDA will provide additional details on this issue as they become available, and the information on this page will be updated accordingly in a timely manner (from FDA). The complexity lies in enforcing this change. Read more in this article: Wisconsin police can't enforce new tobacco 21 law without state law change; change proposed.

FDA bans mint- and fruit-flavored vaping products but exempts menthol and tobacco. The FDA announced it would ban the sale of all flavored e-cigarette cartridges except menthol and tobacco effective 30 days from the publication of its new guidance for industry. It did not, however, ban flavors sold mostly in vape shops for use in tank vaporizer systems. And the flavor-cartridge ban may not hold if manufacturers are able to obtain FDA authorization to sell such products. A federal court order set May 12, 2020, as the date by which all e-cigarette and vaporizer manufacturers must obtain such authorization from FDA or be removed from the market. PAX Labs released a new marijuana vaporizer (pictured above on the left). Given the adolescent vaping epidemic brought about largely by Juul and the vaping-related lung injuries brought about largely by vaping marijuana, one questions the wisdom of introducing a new THC vaporizer that looks a lot like Juul at this time.

What are Puff Bars? (pictured above on the right) Puff Bars mimic the massively popular JUUL and its many copycat e-cigarette devices, but are designed for one-time use. They come in many youth-appealing flavors, including O.M.G (Orange, Mango, Guava), but are not subject to the new federal policy regulating flavored e-cigarettes.

Governor Evers addresses youth vaping by announcing an agenda to help combat vaping among kids and educate the public about the potential dangers associated with vaping products. Read more.
Wisconsin’s State Superintendent’s Equity Stakeholder Council (Council) studied social and emotional learning (SEL) through an equity lens from January to June of 2018. After a deep examination of salient research, school visits, and conversations with national leaders, the Council recommends all districts and schools consider the strategies presented in Advancing Equity through Social Emotional Learning to implement high-quality SEL services and systems, keep equity at the forefront of their work, and maintain our shared commitment to disrupting systemic educational inequities across Wisconsin. The strategies are organized into four domains—student experience, district and school engagement, coherence and alignment, and community partnerships—and include a general belief statement for each of the corresponding domains.

Mindfulness Begins with You

The WISH Center has developed a mindfulness workshop dedicated to professionals cultivating their own mindful practices. A big part of learning is taking the time to reflect on your practice. To facilitate reflection, we purposefully incorporated reflection time into the workshop.
As an added bonus for attending participants are given a journal designed by Carole Anderson, graphic artist who has created all the WISH Center materials. We are grateful to Carole for creating this beautiful journal as a reminder to document your mindful practice.
If you haven’t already done so, make sure you register for this workshop and begin or continue your journey in mindfulness and a sense of calm.
