Got hope?

Dear <<First Name>>,

Have you ever wished for something in your life, only to face disappointment at every turn?

It can be hard to keep hope alive.

But it can also be the most important thing we do!

That's the message in the brand new book Hope in the Mail by local author Wendelin Van Draanen.  It tells the story of her 10-year journey to getting her books published -- as she navigated life, career, bumps in the road, and the temptation to just give up.

This book has an inspiring message for anyone who has a big dream and wants to turn it into a reality.

Van Draanen will be reading excerpts from this book and her other bestselling books at the library this Wednesday evening. Come join us for a casual and fun evening of celebrating the creative journey and of keeping hope alive.

Senior Book Break: "Bucket List"
This month, the topic of Senior Book Break was "Bucket List."

Here are the books and authors that the group discussed.

Route 66: The Mother Road by Michael Wallis

Our member took the road trip, in a small caravan, and loved it. This book has lots of pictures of scenes along the route. The trip inspired our member to plan a motorcycle trip up the West Coast. Get this – she will be riding in the sidecar!

Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth by Rachel Maddow

This entry is an investigation into the practices of Big Oil, and meant to strengthen our resolve to save our planet, a problem we face today.

Lock In: A Novel of the Near Future by John Scalzi

Inventive Sci-Fi mystery, set in the future, gives a new perspective on what the world may become, and adaptations mankind must make.

Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within by Natalie Goldberg

The author inspires would be writers to take the plunge and get on that book you want to write. With humor and insight, you may cross writing a book off that bucket list.

Not Without Laughter by Langston Hughes

This book, written in 1930, is a coming of age story, about growing up in rural Kansas. A portrait of life in an African American family echoes the black experience almost 100 years ago. A poignant, loving look back at where we were.

The Peripheral by William Gibson

Another Sci-Fi thriller, this one involving time travel, both forward, and backward! And intriguing, futuristic look at gaming, time and its continuum.

Nomadland: Surviving America in the 21st Century by Jessica Bruder

A dark look at the 21st century, when employers discover a whole new work force in rootless seniors, who have lost homes and taken to the roads, in RV’s, trailers and even vans. This nonfiction book illustrates the resilience of Americans who have given up roots, but not hope.
